Tonight: Bloodshot Records Fall Pageant at The Bell House

November 7, 2010

Bloodshot Records, an indie label from Chicago, presents the Bloodshot Records Fall Pageant at The Bell House tonight. The show will include The Bottle Rockets, Graham Parker, Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Cordero, Lydia Loveless, plus special guests to be announced.  The tickets are just $10 and Red Hook’s The Good Fork will be on hand to provide food as well.  This is a very good show and a great deal.  If you need more info about Bloodshot, here’s how they describe themselves:

Bloodshot Records has championed the music that lurks between genres. We’ve always been drawn to the good stuff nestled in the dark, nebulous cracks where punk, country, soul, pop, bluegrass, blues and rock mix and mingle and mutate. We like artists who work over American roots forms with chains and velvet gloves with little regard for formality or protocol, who aren’t afraid to molest and caress these forms and take music into uncharted and exciting waters.

Bloodshot Records Fall Pageant with The Bottle Rockets, Graham Parker, Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Cordero, Lydia Loveless and others TBA,  The Bell House, 149 7th Street near 2nd Avenue, Brooklyn, (F or G Trains to 9th Street or R Train to 4th Avenue),  Doors 5:30pm / Show 6:30pm (you remembered to turn your clocks back, didn’t you?), $10

News and Notes: Norah Jones, My Pet Dragon and November Starts Off Strong

November 1, 2010

If you wanted to see Norah Jones, the past few days were the time to do it.  As noted in the Now I’ve Heard Everything October Calendar, Norah was part of last Thursday’s Petty Fest tribute to Tom Petty (on the occasion of Tom’s 60th birthday), where she joined in on about a half dozen songs including It’s Time to Move On and You Don’t Know How It Feels.  On Saturday, Norah was one of the performers who took part in Radio Happy Hour at Le Poisson Rouge.  In addition to singing three songs solo (Young Blood, a Lowell George cover whose name escapes me and How Many Times Have You Broken My Heart), Norah was interviewed and appeared in a faux radio drama playing a CIA agent named Norah Jones.  The photo above is from Saturday’s Radio Happy Hour performance.

I had heard some buzz about My Pet Dragon over the past few months.  I just wasn’t able to get to one of their shows.  But I finally did so Saturday was was quite impressed with the band.  I want to hear them again but I plan to be talking about them again.

The next 14 days is one of those periods where there a many worthwhile shows, some of which conflict with each other.  I’ll just list who is playing:

Sasha Dobson, Jonathan Richman, Jim Lauderdale, Carrie Rodriguez Melody Kills (New Leslie Mendelson Project), Teddy Thompson, Madison Square Gardeners, Jim Keller, Charlie Faye, Milton, Hey Mama, Mike Viola, My Pet Dragon The Bottle Rockets, Graham Parker, Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Cordero, Lydia LovelessNick Africano, Willie Nile Chuck Prophet, Stephanie Finch, Emily Zuzik, Andy Shernoff (Dictators), Paul Collins, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby and Jon Graboff’s Pedal Steel Guitar World of Discovery

This is certainly a time to plan in advance, so be sure to check Now I’ve Heard Everything’s November Calendar.  I’ll also be updating the calendar shortly with additional events in the latter part of the month.
