Advance Planning: June 2016 Music Calendar

June 1, 2016

Calendar 4

It’s June, so here is the June music calendar.  This month has more shows happening than the past few months and one day when it seems that everyone in town is playing someplace (June 2).  Make Music New York will happen on June 21st, and if there is a searchable schedule for it, I’ll post some recommendations later in the month.

In any event, the usual ground rules apply: listings are for venues in New York City (and occasionally Hoboken or Jersey City near public transportation) and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less.  I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As always, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month, both in a separate post and with updates on this calendar.

Today: Laura Cantrell at Pete’s Candy Store

March 26, 2016

Laura Cantrell Jimmy Ryan Jeremy Chatsky edit 5-12-15

Laura Cantrell was born and raised in Nashville, but came to New York City for college and never left.  She’s not only a singer and songwriter but a musicologist as well, having served as the proprietress as The Radio Thrift Shop on WFMURolling Stone has called Laura “A modern woman with an old-timey heart, with a voice pitched somewhere between the bluesy realism of Lucinda Williams and the vintage femininity of Kitty Wells.”

Laura plays traditional country, alt-country and folk-rock as well.  The title song from her debut album, Not The Trembling Kind, was written by Jersey rocker George Usher.  She’s also covered Gordon Lightfoot‘s Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Laura has opened for Elvis Costello and also for country music legend Charlie Louvin.

Does seeing music on a late Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg works for you?  Then this is the show to see today.

Laura CantrellPete’s Candy Store, 709 Lorimer Street, Williamsburg (G Train to Metropolitan Avenue or L Train to Lorimer Street), 5pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly encouraged)

Advance Planning: November 2015 Music Calendar

Calendar3

It’s November, so here is the Now I’ve Heard Everything Music Calendar for this month.  Here are the usual ground rules: listings are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less (but I’ll include some higher priced New Year’s Eve Shows as well). I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As always, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.
