Tonight: The Karyn Kuhl Band at Sinatra Park in Hoboken

June 16, 2016

Karen Kuhl

Here’s all you need to know about Karyn Kuhl: she’s a force of nature, both on the guitar and on vocals.  She leads her band through original songs which blend blues, garage rock and mid 60s pop.  Bracing is a word that comes to mind for a set from Karen and the band.

Just last week, Karyn released a new EP, The Stars Will Take You Home.  Those six songs include five original songs and one very surprising cover.  That EP contains the best new collection of psychedelic rock you will hear this year.

PATH trains will take you to Hoboken.  It’s not all that far from the PATH station to Sinatra Park.  Although there is some rain in the forecast for today, it should be over long before the show there begins with The Christine Santelli Band at 7pm.

Karyn Kuhl Band (Christine Santelli Band opens),  Sinatra Park Hoboken (PATH Train to Hoboken), show 7pm, Free

Tonight: The Karen Kuhl Band at The Hi-Fi Bar

May 11, 2016

Karen Kuhl

Here’s all you need to know about Karen Kuhl: she’s a force of nature, both on the guitar and on vocals.  She leads her band through original songs which blend blues, garage rock and mid 60s pop.  Bracing is a word that comes to mind for a set from Karen and the band.  They usually stick to playing close to home in Hoboken, so take tonight’s opportunity to see Karen in the East Village.  Opening the show will be Matt Keating, a wonderful singer-songwriter.  There’s a lot of good live music this week, but this is the show I’m probably anticipating most.

Karen Kuhl Band (Matt Keating opens),  Hi-Fi Bar, 69 Avenue A between 10th and 11th Streets (Any train to 14th Street or L Train to 1st Avenue, then transfer to the 14 A bus to 11th Street), show 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musician is highly recommended)

Tonight: The Karen Kuhl Band at Beast of Bourbon

December 6, 2014

Karen Kuhl

Here’s all you need to know about Karen Kuhl: she’s a force of nature, both on the guitar and on vocals.  She leads her band through original songs which blend blues, garage rock and mid 60s pop.  Bracing is a word that comes to mind for a set from Karen and the band.  They usually stick to playing close to home in Hoboken, so take tonight’s opportunity to see Karen in Brooklyn.

And a word is in order for the venue, Beast of Bourbon.  BoB features BBQ, 42 draft beers and over 40 bourbons.  So between the food, the drink and the music, you’ll have a great time tonight.

Karen Kuhl Band, Beast of Bourbon, 710 Myrtle Avenue between Walworth and Spencer Streets (G Train to Myrtle – Willoughby), 10pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Advance Planning: December 2014 Music Calendar

December 1, 2014

Calendar3

It’s time for the December Music Calendar.  The usual ground rules apply: listings on the calendar are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As usual, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.  Expect already announced New Years Eve shows to sell out, but some shows will be announced shortly and there will be some open houses around as well.  Meanwhile, get your calendars out and start planing December.
