Advance Planning: October 2015 Music Calendar

September 29, 2015

Calendar3

Both the calendar and the weather are poised to change over the next few days.  So here is the Now I’ve Heard Everything Music Calendar for October.  The new month will start out with everyone (or so it seems) playing on the first.  Two weeks later, we’ll have the 2015 edition of CMJ.  And I’ve already listed two New Year’s Eve shows, too.

Here are the usual ground rules: listings are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As always, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.

Advance Planning: September 2015 Music Calendar

September 1, 2015

Calendar3

It’s September, but a quirk in the calendar gives us a full week before Labor Day.  So the summer season has one more week than usual to run.

I’ve broken one of the usual rules to list a show that is priced above the $40 ticket price cutoff.  That show is Neil Fest, which has a bunch of big names singing the songs of Neil Young.  At $50-55 a ticket, it’s pricey, but it’s being done for charity.

As for the rest of the calendar, the usual ground rules apply: listings are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As always, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.

Tonight: Rosie Flores at Hill Country NY

July 10, 2015

Rosie Flores 1

Rosie Flores is in town tonight at Hill County NY.  If you’ve ever heard Rosie, you’ll be there.  If you are unfamiliar with her, here’s the pertinent info; Rosie is based in Austin, a town where rock, Americana and alt country all seem to blend together.  Rosie herself plays country/alt country/electric blues/rock n roll and rockabilly in a style that can sometimes even call to mind Stevie Ray Vaughan.  Although no stranger to New York (the photo above was taken when she dropped in on Li’l Mo and The Monicats on night a few years back), Rosie is not here often enough. So take this opportunity to see her.  The last time Rosie was scheduled to play Hill County was in January and her show was cancelled because of the snow.  I can guarantee that will not happen tonight!

P.S.  If you can’t make tonight’s show, Rosie will be playing Hill Country Brooklyn tomorrow night at the same time.

Rosie FloresHill County NY, 30 W. 26th Street between 6th Avenue and Broadway (F, M or R Trains to 23rd Street), show 9pm (For dinner reservations, please call 212-255-4544, and let the host know you would like to be seated in the music area), No Cover

Tonight: Jon Dee Graham at Hill Country NY or North of Amarillo at Skinny Dennis

June 17, 2015

Jon Dee Graham

Tonight, there are two choices, both in Texas themed venues and both at 9pm.   In Chelsea, at Hill County NY, you’ll find Jon Dee Graham, an Austin legend.  One of my first encounters with Jon Dee was at a show at SXSW some years ago.  “You don’t need leather pants to rock,”  Jon insisted, and then continued “if I want to rock in a ratty sweater, I’ll rock in a ratty sweater.” Jon Dee is not only a great rocker and a curmudgeonly funny story teller, but in the late 80s he was a member of the band The True Believers along with Alejandro Escovedo.

North of Amarillo

North of Amarillo, a band with Now I’ve Heard Everything favorite Kelli Scarr on lead vocals, will play  Skinny Dennis in Williamsburg tonight starting at 9pm.  Inspired by the music of Emmylou Harris, North of Amarillo pays tribute to her classic songs and arrangements along with a mix of originals and other country favorites. In addition to Kelli, NOA features Luca Benedetti and Jason Loughlin on Telecaster Guitars, Jonny Lam on Pedal Steel Guitar, Scott Colberg on Bass and Arthur Vint on drums.

Jon Dee Graham, Hill County NY, 30 W. 26th Street between 6th Avenue and Broadway (F, M or R Trains to 23rd Street), 9pm (For dinner reservations, please call 212-255-4544, and let the host know you would like to be seated in the music area), No Cover

North of Amarillo, Skinny Dennis, 152 Metropolitan Avenue at Berry Street (G to Metropolitan Avenue, L to Bedford Avenue or Lorimer Street), No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended), 9pm

Advance Planning: June 2015 Music Calendar

May 26, 2015

Calendar3

Right on schedule, the warm summer weather arrived yesterday.  And in less than a week, June will arrive too.  So here is the June Music Calendar.  The usual ground rules apply: listings are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As usual, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.  I’m still waiting to see if Make Music New York will produce a usable calendar this year (unlike last year) and if so, I’ll add selected performances from it later.  I’m also waiting for a venue or two to update their calendars.
