Music Video: Eric Ambel – Hey Mr. DJ

June 19, 2016

Eric Ambel Hey Mr DJ

Eric Ambel recently released a new album.  The record is titled Lakeside, in tribute to The Lakeside Lounge, Eric’s bar and music venue that closed four years ago.  Eric’s resume includes stints with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Steve Earle and The Del-Lords (Eric remains an essential part of that band).  Lakeside is a mix of Eric’s originals and covers and everything on it rocks.  This song, Hey Mr. DJ was written by Jimbo Mathis, who produced Lakeside.

Advance Planning: June 2016 Music Calendar

June 1, 2016

Calendar 4

It’s June, so here is the June music calendar.  This month has more shows happening than the past few months and one day when it seems that everyone in town is playing someplace (June 2).  Make Music New York will happen on June 21st, and if there is a searchable schedule for it, I’ll post some recommendations later in the month.

In any event, the usual ground rules apply: listings are for venues in New York City (and occasionally Hoboken or Jersey City near public transportation) and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less.  I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As always, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month, both in a separate post and with updates on this calendar.

Tonight: The Radigan Roundup at The 12th Street Bar and Grill

May 22, 2016

12th Street Bar

Check out tonight’s edition of The Radigan Roundup.  This show is run by Terry Radigan on Sundays at Park Slope’s 12th Street Bar and Grill.  As usually, Terry will play a short set and is joined tonight by Eric Ambel, Mary Lee Kortes, Diane Garisto, Elise Morris, Carmella Ramsey, and Kenny Vaughan.  At the Roundup, the music is usually stripped down and things are loose and spontaneous.  Things will get going tonight at 7:30pm  and run through 10:30pm, but getting to The 12th Street Bar and Grill early for a seat (the place is on the small size) is not a bad idea.

The Radigan Roundup with  Terry Radigan,  Eric Ambel, Mary Lee Kortes, Diane Garisto, Elise Morris, Carmella Ramsey, and Kenny Vaughan, 12th Street Bar and Grill, 1123 8th Avenue – enter on 12th Street, Park Slope (F Train to 7th Avenue, use the 8th Avenue exit), 7:30pm, No Cover, (but a contribution for the musicians is highly encouraged)

Tonight: Sad Bastards of Brooklyn at The Sidewalk Cafe

May 20, 2016

Sad Bastards

Every so often for the past few years, Charlene McPherson and Mo Goldner step out of their amazing hard rocking band, Spanking Charlene, and play a low key acoustic set.  They call themselves The Sad Bastards of Brooklyn.  An SBB show is not just any set of music, but a set of some of the saddest songs that Charlene and Mo know.

Under the watchful eye of producer Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Charlene and Mo have recorded songs by the likes of Bob Dylan, Jackson Brown, Johnny Thunders and Alex Chilton, and even an original.  Two albums have resulted from that collaboration, Sad Bastards of Brooklyn Volume 1, which was one of Now I’ve Heard Everything’s Best Albums of 2014, and the follow up, Sad Bastards of Brooklyn, Volume 2.  Now I’m hearing that a few more songs are in the can.  That should be enough reason to be at The Sidewalk Cafe.

Sad Bastards of Brooklyn, Sidewalk Cafe,  94 Avenue A at 6th Street (Any Train to 14th Street, L Train to 1st Avenue, F Train to Delancey Street or J or M Trains to Essex Street, then transfer to M14A Bus to 6th Street) 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Tonight: Eric Ambel and Spanking Charlene at Berlin

April 29, 2016

Eric Roscoe Ambel Walk Away Renee

Tonight there’s a double bill at Berlin that is liable to rock your sock off.  Eric Ambel just released a new album and this is the release show for it.  The record is titled Lakeside, in tribute to The Lakeside Lounge, Eric’s bar and music venue that closed four years ago almost to the day.  Eric’s resume includes stints with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Steve Earle and The Del-Lords (Eric remains an essential part of that band).  Lakeside is a mix of Eric’s originals and covers and everything on it rocks.  So you know what to expect when Eric and his band take the stage first in this show at 8:30pm.

After Eric, long time Now I’ve Heard Everything favorite Spanking Charlene will close the show.  That band has been declared The Underground Garage’s Best Unsigned Band and their album Where Are The Freaks? was Now I’ve Heard Everything’s Best Album of 2012. When you put Charlene McPherson on vocals, Mo Goldner on guitar, David Leatherwood on bass, Eric Seftel on drums and add Mario Viele on guitar, you get a combination of rock and punk reminiscent of The RamonesSpanking Charlene will supply 100% of your minimum daily requirement of rock n roll.
