Tonight: Three Shows

June 17, 2016

Choices Large

There are three shows tonight which I can recommend.  It might be possible to see the two shows at the two different Rockwood stages, but that will require really paying heed to the clock.

Over in Brooklyn, Megan Reilly  will play Union Hall.  Her last record, The Well, is flat out wonderful.  Originally from Memphis, Megan has lived in both New York City and Philadelphia before settling in suburban New Jersey.  Of course none of that tell you about Megan’s music.  Call it rock with a psychedelic tinge and Megan’s ethereal vocals.  Real rock, no acoustic guitars or stand up basses here.  And Megan’s band is made up of top notch area musicians: James Mastro on guitar, Tony Maimone on bass and Steve Goulding on drums.  It appears that Megan will be the second act to play in a show that starts at 8pm.  Call the club if you need an exact time here.

Back in Manhattan on the Lower East Side at the original stage of The Rockwood Music Hall, at 9pm, you’ll find Mieka Pauley.  Mieka had taken some time off from performing over the last few months, but she’s back at The Rockwood every Friday this month.  Mieka is an incisive writer, a powerful singer and a fine blues guitarist, and  whether she is singing her own songs or playing a few choice covers, you’ll find yourself moved by her performance.  So whether you’ve seen Mieka before or she is new to you, this is a great show to see.

Then, at 10pm around the block at Rockwood Stage 3, the debut of The Allie, Bess and Hannah Harmony Extravaganza.  Former Secret Someones Hannah Winker and Bess Rogers will be joined by long time musical associate Allie Moss.  The group promises “an entire night of harmonies harmonies and more harmonies. We’ll be doing some originals and some covers, all in 3 part harmony bliss!”  You might want to get your tickets in advance for this one as it has a chance of selling out.

Megan Reilly, Union Hall, 702 Union Street near the corner of 5th Avenue (R Train to Union Street), doors 7:30pm /show 8pm, $10

Mieka Pauley, Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

The Allie, Bess and Hannah Harmony Extravaganza, Rockwood Stage 3, 185 Orchard Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 10pm, $10, with a two drink minimum

Tonight: The Jewbadours at The Highline Ballroom or Exile on the Bowery at The Bowery Electric

December 23, 2014

Choices Large

With tomorrow being Christmas Eve, there’s a two night break in the music coming.  But tonight there are two shows, both with casts of thousands (OK, dozens) before that break.

Over at The Highline Ballroom, The Jewbadours play another in a series of “farewell” performances knows as The Last Schmaltz.  The Jewbadors have stated their mission: “bring the hits and lesser-known classics of the late ’70s and early ’80s back to the masses. Their catalog is a virtual A to Z of the Billboard charts from three and half decades past: Ambrosia to Xanadu.”  Musicians tonight will include Ari Hest, Julian Velard, Toby Lightman, Jay Jay French, Rosi Golan, Allie Moss, Chrissi Poland, Amanda Brown, Colin Smith, Wes Hutchinson and Jamie McClean.  Doors open here at 6pm with the show at 8pm.

If your tastes are more rock and new wave, then hit The Bowery Electric‘s Exile on The Bowery Holiday Party.  It includes Bakersfield Breakers, Certain General, Charlie Roth, Deborah Frost, Deer France, Jahn Xavier, James Wynbrandt, Jana Peri, The Rousers, Tom Wynbrandt, Tuff Darts, Walter Lure and Walter Steding.  Things get going at 7pm or so.

The Jewbadours, The Highline Ballroom, 431 W. 16th Street, between 9th and 10th Ave (A, C or E Trains to 14th Street), doors 6pm / show 8pm, $20, $35 (VIP seating)

Exile on The Bowery Holiday Party, The Bowery Electric, 327 Bowery between 2nd and 3rd Streets (6 Train to Bleecker Street or Astor Place, F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 2nd Avenue exit), doors 7pm

Advance Planning: December 2014 Music Calendar

December 1, 2014

Calendar3

It’s time for the December Music Calendar.  The usual ground rules apply: listings on the calendar are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As usual, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.  Expect already announced New Years Eve shows to sell out, but some shows will be announced shortly and there will be some open houses around as well.  Meanwhile, get your calendars out and start planing December.

Tonight: Bess Rogers at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

October 6, 2011

Having just released a new album, Out of the Ocean, Bess Rogers and her band will play their CD release show at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 tonight.  Here’s how Bess describes the show:

I am playing a CD Release Show in New York on October 6th!  Allie Moss is playing as well as another secret special guest (hint: it’s not Michael McDonald). My lovely band and I will be playing the whole album front to back, and would love for you to be there!  Tickets are $10 but come with a free CD.

If you don’t know Bess, you really should.  Her songs run the the gamut from pop to rock to folk rock to pop punk.  On first listen, Out of the Ocean is both delightful and satisfying.

To recap: three acts, and a free CD for ten bucks.  You can’t go wrong with tonight’s show.

Bess Rogers (Allie Moss and a Special Guest open),  Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 7pm, $10
