Advance Planning: December 2015 Music Calendar

November 30, 2015

Calendar3

Tomorrow is December, so here is the December Now I’ve Heard Everything Music Calendar.  The usual ground rules apply: listings are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less (but I’ll include some higher priced New Year’s Eve Shows as well). I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As always, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month, both in a separate post and with updates on this calendar.

Tonight: Highway 61 Revisited With an All Star Cast at Lincoln Center Out of Doors

August 8, 2015

Highway 61 Revisited

In August,1965, Bob Dylan released his second album of that year, Highway 61 Revisited.  It was the album where Dylan went electric.  It’s first track, Like a Rolling Stone, was the first six minute single ever released (although most radio stations at the time played only the first half of that song).  In other words, this was an important record, one which did indeed change the path of American music.

Tonight, Highway 61 Revisited will be played in its entirety by the Watkins Family Hour house band, Shawn Colvin, Rodney Crowell, Pokey LaFarge, Aimee Mann and Ted Leo, Fiona Apple and more.  Justin Townes Earle will play an opening set.  This show is free at Lincoln Center Out of Doors at Damrosch Park.  The start time is 7pm, but I suggest that you get there as early as you can to get a seat as it will be crowded.

Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited performed in its entirety by the Watkins Family Hour house band, Shawn Colvin, Rodney Crowell, Pokey LaFarge, Aimee Mann and Ted Leo, Fiona Apple and more (Justin Townes Earle opens), Lincoln Center Out of Doors at Damrosch Park, 62nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues (A, C, D or 1 Trains to 59th Street), show 7pm, Free

Calendar3

The heat and humidity are here and August will be here in just a few days.  So here is the August Music Calendar. Of note during the month is The Brooklyn Country Music Festival being held at The Bell House on August 20th through the 23rd.

As for the calendar, the usual ground rules apply: listings are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As always, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.

Advance Planning: July 2015 Music Calendar

June 29, 2015

Calendar3

It’s just about July, so here is the July Music Calendar.  The usual ground rules apply: listings are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.

Also of note this month is The Prospect Heights Music and Art Festival which runs from July 15-19.  The music portion of the PHMAF will take place at The Way Station, Branded Saloon, The Soda Bar and The Saint Catherine.  I have not included any recommendations for the Festival because I am mostly unfamiliar with the bands playing there.  But there is a PHMAF mixtape here.

Some venues play things close to the vest.  So this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.

Advance Planning: December 2014 Music Calendar

December 1, 2014

Calendar3

It’s time for the December Music Calendar.  The usual ground rules apply: listings on the calendar are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As usual, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.  Expect already announced New Years Eve shows to sell out, but some shows will be announced shortly and there will be some open houses around as well.  Meanwhile, get your calendars out and start planing December.

Music Video: The Both – No Sir (Live)

June 22, 2014

The Both No Sir Live crop

The Both consists of Aimee Mann and Ted Leo.  This video is from a live in the studio performance they did during their tour two months ago.  The song is called No Sir, and it seems right to me for a quiet Sunday morning.
