Every so often for the past few years, Charlene McPherson and Mo Goldner step out of their amazing hard rocking band, Spanking Charlene, and play a low key acoustic set. They call themselves The Sad Bastards of Brooklyn. An SBB show is not just any set of music, but a set of some of the saddest songs that Charlene and Mo know. This past Friday, they released their latest album, Sad Bastards of Brooklyn Volume 2.
Along with 11 covers, Charlene and Mo included one original song, Oh Brooklyn. It’s not only a great song, but Charlene’s vocal is gorgeous. Click the player below and give it a listen. And if you click the buy link in the player you can purchase the track or even the entire album.

How about a Christmas freebie? Last year Catherine Popper wrote a holiday song called Shake Yer Christmas Butt. She performed it with Puss n Boots live and I posted a video of it here.
Recently Cat went into Tommy Stinson‘s studio with Tommy, Frank Ferrer, Steve Selvidge and Tony Kieraldo and recorded a new version of that song. As Cat notes, that means that “members of The Replacements, The Hold Steady and Guns and Roses spreading Christmas Butt cheer!”
You can play that recording below and download your own copy by clicking the down arrow just below the Soundcloud logo on the upper right side of the player. But act fast, because the freebie is scheduled to go away after tomorrow.

Back in 2009, Sarah Borges released an album, The Stars Are Out, which was one of Now I’ve Heard Everything’s Top Albums for that year. Subsequently, Sarah dissolved her band, had a kid and kept a much lower profile. Recently, she made the trip from her home base in Massachusetts to Williamsburg. There, at Cowboy Technical Services, she recorded an EP’s worth of tunes under the watchful eye of producer Eric Ambel. The first of these songs, Caught By the Rain, has made its way onto the the Internet, and it’s wonderful. You can listen to it by clicking on the player below. And after hearing it, you can buy it on iTunes if you wish, and wait with me for the entire project, title Good and Dirty, to be released on March 4, 2016.
