Saturday: The Last Day of CMJ

October 22, 2011

Today is the final day of CMJ, and many of today’s picks give you your last opportunity of CMJ to catch some of the bands you might have missed during the past few days.  Playing another set today are Sydney Wayser, Misty Boyce,Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club and Jonathan Richman.

Playing for the first time during CMJ tonight is Drina Seay who will sing and play her country, alt country and retro pop songs.  And finally, My Pet Dragon, a band which blends rock and a touch of 80s electro pop into an anthemic sound will play an early set tonight.

Friday: CMJ Has Some Good Shows All Day Long

October 21, 2011

Although there were a couple of band cancellations from the original schedule for today, there is still an interesting mix of shows tonight.  You have your third an final chance at CMJ to see folk-rockers KaiserCartel, whose set at The Rock Shop the other night was the tightest and most melodic set I have seem them play.  Up for the third time as well today is Aaron Lee Tasjan and Weird Ohio; this band just blew the roof off when they played in Brooklyn on Wednesday night.

Also for your consideration tonight is the psychedelic rock of Cosmos Says Hello, the 60s-pop-tinged music of The Grip Weeds, and the straight ahead rock of Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club. In a category all by himself is Jonathan Richman, who is playing a non-CMJ sponsored show at The Bell House in Brooklyn.

Thursday: Quality Over Quantity at CMJ

October 20, 2011

All I have listed today are two shows, and one isn’t even a CMJ show.  But these acts are extremely high quality and you should not pass up the opportunity to see them both.

Here’s what I said about “The Elvis Club” back in August:

The Elvis Club is a pseudonym.  I haven’t seen anything that straight out says who they are, but both the website and Facebook page of The Del-Lords mention that The Elvis Club will be playing a warm up date for Turbo Rock at The Lakeside Lounge tonight.  Turbo Rock is a festival in Spain this weekend at which The Del-Lords will be playing.  So it seems pretty obvious what band The Elvis Club really is.

If you were around New York City in the 80s, you probably heard, or at least heard of The Del-Lords.  In the winter of 2010, The Del-Lords got back together, played a small number of shows and recorded five tracks which they released on the EP, Under Construction.  That EP made the Now I’ve Heard Everything Best of 2010 list.  You can listen to and buy all those tracks at The Del-Lords bandcamp page here. The Lakeside Lounge is a small place, so if you are going to this show, I recommend getting there early.

I was at the August show and I can tell you from personal experience that if rock ‘n’ roll matters to you, catch this show.

The Elvis Club’s gig should finish by 8 and give you enough time to get yourself down to The Delancey, the club in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridsge.  Playing there tonight is Now I’ve Heard Everything Favorite Misty Boyce.  Misty is currently recording her second album, a follow up to her impressive self titled album from 2010. So you’ll hear some new material with her older well crafted songs.  Misty plays pop rock and ballads, her shows are excellent because she pours so much of herself into her performance, and the crowds always respond.  I am sure tonight will be no exception.

Wednesday: CMJ – Start Early, Stay Late

October 19, 2011

Today offers a nice range of bands.  The late afternoon show presented by KEXP with Brooklyn’s Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is free, has limited room and will fill up quickly.  Get there really early if you want to get in.

The evening has indie pop rockers The Postelles up early at 8pm, a nice pairing at The Rock Shop in Park Slope of straight ahead rockers Aaron Lee Tasjan and Weird Ohio (erroneously listed on the CMJ schedule as The Madison Square Gardeners, a different band Aaron plays in) and lo-fi folk rockers KaiserCartel.  This show has a $10 admission charge if you do not have a CMJ badge.

Back in Manhattan, Sydney Wayser will be performing her keyboard-based atmospheric songs at The Living Room.  No doubt she’ll feature the new material from her forthcoming album, Belle Choir Coast.  Later, Brooklyn’s Ursa Minor will bring their brand of atmospheric indie rock likely focusing on song from their excellent recent album, Showface, to the Living Room stage.  Update: This show has a $8 admission charge if you do not have a CMJ badge.  Finally, if you missed Aaron Lee Tasjan earlier at The Rock Shop, you can catch him at 1am at The Bowery Electric.

A note about set times: there are frequently three different times listed (one each on the official CMJ schedule, on the club schedule and on the band’s website).  Today, I’ve gone with the time listed on the CMJ schedule only because it is invariably the earliest of the three times, and it’s preferable that you get someplace too early rather than too late and find that you’ve missed the band.

Update: I’ve changed the time on the Aaron Lee Tasjan show because he and the promoter have both stated that the time is later than what I originally posted.

Tuesday: CMJ 2011 Begins

October 18, 2011

The CMJ 2011 Music Marathon, a conference and festival, begins today and  will run through Saturday (October 22).  I’ve heard the number of bands involved in CMJ estated to be around 1,000 this year.  They will be performing throughout the week in various bars and clubs in Manhattan and Brooklyn.  Admission to CMJ shows is without additional charge to those who are CMJ badge holders, and depends upon the admission policy of the bar or club otherwise: some are free, some have an admission charge.  Most CMJ shows are short; some run less than 30 minutes.

During the run of CMJ, Now I’ve Heard Everything will be providing a list of shows that are worth checking out.  A problem which presented itself in compiling the CMJ shows is that there are frequently three different times listed (one each on the official CMJ schedule, on the club schedule and on the band’s website).  For the most part, I’ve gone with the time listed on the CMJ schedule only because it is invariably the earliest of the three times, and it’s preferable that you get someplace too early rather than too late and find that you’ve missed the band.  I’ll also include non-CMJ shows as well.

I didn’t find many shows to list for today (but don’t worry, tomorrow is chock full of goodies).  In fact, two of the three shows listed are not CMJ related.  Tonight you can choose between the incredibly eclectic Julia Haltigan, the rock and electric blues of Austin-based Carolyn Wonderland or the lo-fi folk-rock of Brooklyn’s KaiserCartel.

Advance Planning: October Music Calendar Updates (Added 10/9)

October 9, 2011

With the official CMJ schedule posted, here are another batch of updates.  There are frequently different times listed between the websites of CMJ, the club and the performer.  I’ve gone with the CMJ times whenever possible as they seem to be the earliest.  Most CMJ sets are short, in some cases, as short as 20 minutes.  When in doubt, check with the club before you leave.  I’d like this to be the last CMJ update, but there may be some more.
