I’m recommending two show for tonight. Both feature a large cast of musicians lovingly covering someone else’s music. Things should time out so that you can catch both if you choose to do so.
First up, starting at 7:30pm, at Beast of Bourbon over in Bed-Sty is A Tribute to Bonnie Raitt. Covering songs from Bonnie’s carrer – which goes back more than 40 years now – will be Lizzie Edwards, Sarah Wise, Mary Spencer Knapp, Erica Smith, Rembert Block, Alexis Thomason, Rebecca Turner, Mike Fornatale, Greg McMullen, Rich Feridun, Charly Roth, Tom Shad, Tommy DeVito, Javier Ramos, and no doubt more. Come early, get some BBQ and check out dozens of beers and bourbons if you choose.
And there’s even a great raffle: a pair of tickets to see Bonnie’s sold out show at The Beacon on Saturday, April 2nd. Just enter your name, and the winner will be announced at the end of the second set.
Back in Manhattan over at the Lower East Side at The Rockwood Music Hall’s Stage 2, you’ll find tonight’s installment of The After Party (the above photo was taken at the January installment of the show). The After Party is the latest in a line of shows at The Rockwood in which a large number of musicians who are part of The Rockwood community get together and cover songs. At The After Party, each show is dedicated to songs belonging to a given year. Yes, it’s going to be a late night. But if the time works for you, The After Party will be fun and surprising.
A Tribute to Bonnie Raitt, Beast of Bourbon, 710 Myrtle Avenue between Walworth and Spencer Streets (G Train to Myrtle – Willoughby), 7:30pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)
The After Party, Rockwood Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 11:30pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)
