Tonight: Four Shows

Choices Large

It’s one of those nights when there are multiple shows worth seeing.  This time around three are opposite each other, but it’s quite likely that they will all end in time for you to see the latter show.  Here’s the rundown.

In Greenwich Village, the Leave a Lasting Mark series continues at The Bitter End.  This time around, the theme is 90s One Hit Wonders and money raised will go to benefit MILE.  The all star cast includes John Brodeur, Bryan Dunn, Andi Rae Healy, Hey Monea, Chris Kelly, John Laprade, Jeff Litman, Andy Mac, Andrea Nardello, Janna Pelle, Mark Radcliffe, Sonny Ratcliff, Gerry Rosenthal, Kimberly Schwab, Jason Spiewak, Scott Stein, Jenn Summers, Paul Tabachneck, Rich Wisneski, Laura Mae Baker and more.  Start time here is 7pm.

Moving south to the East Village, you’ll find the one of a kind Syd Straw at The Hi-Fi Bar.  Syd has an amazing voice, has sung back up with Pat Benatar, fronted The Golden Palominos and put out one of my all time favorite rock albums, War and Peace.  Syd now lives in a small town in Vermont and is in New York City only infrequently.  So take this opportunity to see a totally unique talent.  Don Piper opens the show at 7:30pm

Over on The Bowery, you’ll find a reprise performance of Spoonful of Lovin’.  It’s a tribute to The Lovin’ Spoonful with Charly Roth, Tom Clark, Dennis Diken leading the musical proceedings.  I saw this show the first time around at The Treehouse at 2A, and it is indeed a heartfelt recreation of some wonderful music from the mid-60s.  This time around, the show is at The Bowery Electric and it will start at 8pm.

Finally, at 10pm at The 11th Street Bar, basically across the street from Hi-Fi and just off Avenue A, Karla Rose  will play a set in the back room.  Her songs draw on a diverse set of influences including noir, 60s girl groups, a bit of country and some show music.  This melange served up by Karla contains many familiar flavors presented in unexpected ways.  And as my colleague at The New York Music Daily has noted, there is a definite Twin Peaks vibe running through Karla’s music.  It’s the perfect way to finish the night.
