There’s a whole night of music in store for your tonight a block or two off Houston Street in either direction. If you’re up for it, you can start early and stay late.
At 8pm at the new club Berlin, which is in the basement of 2A, you’ll find Karla Rose and The Thorns. That’s the new name for Now I’ve Heard Everything favorite Karla Moheno. Her songs draw on a diverse set of influences including noir, 60s girl groups, a bit of country and some show music. This melange served up by Karla and her band contains many familiar flavors presented in unexpected ways. If you have yet to hear Karla’s music, today’s show should be the perfect introduction to it and her.
Move a few blocks south and east at 9pm. That puts you in The Rockwood Music Hall just in time to see Vicki Kristina Barcelona, a trio consisting of Joy Askew, Terry Radigan and Amanda Homi. When they first got together, the songs they were excited to sing as a band were those of Tom Waits. And that’s what they are still doing.
Then stick around until 11pm for The After Party, a new, monthly, late night show at The Rockwood Stage 2. The After Party is the latest in a line of shows at The Rockwood in which a large number of musicians get together and cover songs belonging to a given topic. The musicians this time around are scheduled to include Akie Bermiss, who will also act as MC, Rebecca Haviland, Paul Maddison, Oscar Bautista, Bryan Dunn, Josh Dion, Wes Hutchinson, Caleb Hawley, Kevin Johnston and more.
