Because of the ongoing CMJ, today’s recommendations make up a day night doubleheader, with both ends of this twin bill being hosted at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2. The first band up takes the stage at high noon. Karla Rose and The Thorns is the new name for Now I’ve Heard Everything favorite Karla Moheno. Her songs draw on a diverse set of influences including noir, 60s girl groups, a bit of country and some show music. This melange served up by Karla and her band contains many familiar flavors presented in unexpected ways. If you have yet to hear Karla’s music, today’s show should be the perfect introduction to it and her.
Do what you will after Karla, but get yourself back to Rockwood Stage 2 in time to check out Secret Someones at 10pm. The last time the band – Hannah Winkler, Bess Rogers, Zach Jones and Lelia Broussard – played The Rockwood, just two weeks ago, they blew the roof off of the place. The three women in the band contribute songs, take turns on lead vocals and sing backup. Instrumentally, it’s Bess on electric guitar, Lelia on bass, Hannah on keys, acoustic guitar and tambourine and Zach on drums. There are harmonies and power chords galore and even a bit of an influence from The Cars. I expect this show to be jammed, just like their previous show.
