Tonight, there are two choices, both in Texas themed venues and both at 9pm. In Chelsea, at Hill County NY, you’ll find Jon Dee Graham, an Austin legend. One of my first encounters with Jon Dee was at a show at SXSW some years ago. “You don’t need leather pants to rock,” Jon insisted, and then continued “if I want to rock in a ratty sweater, I’ll rock in a ratty sweater.” Jon Dee is not only a great rocker and a curmudgeonly funny story teller, but in the late 80s he was a member of the band The True Believers along with Alejandro Escovedo.
North of Amarillo, a band with Now I’ve Heard Everything favorite Kelli Scarr on lead vocals, will play Skinny Dennis in Williamsburg tonight starting at 9pm. Inspired by the music of Emmylou Harris, North of Amarillo pays tribute to her classic songs and arrangements along with a mix of originals and other country favorites. In addition to Kelli, NOA features Luca Benedetti and Jason Loughlin on Telecaster Guitars, Jonny Lam on Pedal Steel Guitar, Scott Colberg on Bass and Arthur Vint on drums.
