Tonight: Dear Georgiana at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

June 30, 2015

Dear Georgiana Mercury Lounge 5-18-15

It’s something of a quiet week. But here’s a wonderful show tonight.  At 10pm, Dear Georgiana will play The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2.  Call their music atmospheric folk-rock that’s melodic with very nice vocals.  Dear Georgiana is led by Lauren Balthrop, who also plays in Elizabeth and The Catapult.  Elizabeth Ziman frequently joins Dear Georgiana as well, and may be part of the band tonight.

Dear Georgiana, Rockwood Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 10pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Advance Planning: July 2015 Music Calendar

June 29, 2015

Calendar3

It’s just about July, so here is the July Music Calendar.  The usual ground rules apply: listings are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.

Also of note this month is The Prospect Heights Music and Art Festival which runs from July 15-19.  The music portion of the PHMAF will take place at The Way Station, Branded Saloon, The Soda Bar and The Saint Catherine.  I have not included any recommendations for the Festival because I am mostly unfamiliar with the bands playing there.  But there is a PHMAF mixtape here.

Some venues play things close to the vest.  So this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.

Music Video: Dawes – All Your Favorite Bands (Live at WFUV)

June 28, 2015

Dawes Favorite Bands WFUV

Here’s the title track of the latest Dawes album, All Your Favorite Bands.  This video was shot by WFUV when that band dropped by last month.  Long time Dawes fans will note the addition of another guitarist to the band for this tour: Duane Betts.

Tonight: Spanking Charlene at Beast of Bourbon

June 27, 2015

Spanking Charlene 2-19-15 1

Spanking Charlene  has been declared The Underground Garage’s Best Unsigned Band and their album Where Are The Freaks? was Now I’ve Heard Everything’s Best Album of 2012. When you put Charlene McPherson on vocals, Mo Goldner on guitar, David Leatherwood on bass, Eric Seftel on drums and add Eric Ambel on guitar, you get a combination of rock and punk reminiscent of The RamonesSpanking Charlene will supply 100% of your minimum daily requirement of rock n roll.

And of course, Beast of Bourbon features BBQ, 42 draft beers and over 40 bourbons.  So between the food, the drink and the music, you’ll have a great time tonight.

Spanking Charlene, Beast of Bourbon, 710 Myrtle Avenue between Walworth and Spencer Streets (G Train to Myrtle – Willoughby), 10pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Tonight: Mieka Pauley at The Rockwood Music Hall and Candy and Women at The Parkside Lounge

June 26, 2015

Mieka Pauley Rockwood 3-21-15

Tonight, there’s a Lower East Side doubleheader on tap.  It starts at the original stage of The Rockwood Music Hall tonight, at 9pm.  There you’ll find Mieka Pauley playing her monthly Rockwood show.  Mieka is an incisive writer, a powerful singer and a fine blues guitarist.  Whether she is singing her own songs or playing a few choice covers, you’ll find yourself moved by Mieka’s performance.  So take this opportunity to see her.

Candy and Women Logo

Once Mieka’s show has finished, walk seven blocks east on Houston Street to Attorney Street.  I don’t think you’ll find any lawyers there, but what you will find on that corner is the Parkside Lounge.  There, in the back room, starting at 11pm, you’ll find Li’l Mo, Drina Seay and Homeboy Steve who will play and sing together as Candy and Women.  There will be loads of Americana, alt country, country and 60s pop, with lovely harmonies, this time around.

Mieka Pauley, Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Candy and Women, Parkside Lounge, 317 East Houston Street at Attorney Street (F Train to Delancey Street or J or M Trains to Essex Street), 11pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Tonight: Lucinda Williams at Celebrate Brooklyn

June 25, 2015

Lucinda Top of Post

Lucinda Williams brings her fabled Americana music to Celebrate Brooklyn tonight.  It’s a free show with a $3 suggested contribution.  I don’t think I need to say more.  I expect Celebrate Brooklyn to be crowded.  But there are about 2,000 seats and room for just as many folks on the hill if you want to bring a blanket.  There are two entrances to Celebrate Brooklyn: the main one at 9th Street and one at 11th Street.  If the line at the main entrance is very long, consider using the 11th Street entrance.  And if you have the afternoon free, sound check usually happens around 3pm.

Lucinda Williams (Jason Walker opens), Celebrate Brooklyn (Prospect Park Bandshell), Entrances at 9th and 11th Streets and Prospect Park West (F or G Trains to 7th Avenue or 15th Street-Prospect Park), doors 6:30pm / show 7:30pm, Free (but a $3 contribution at the time of admission is highly recommended)

News and Notes: More Venue Comings and Goings

June 24, 2015

trash-bar

The Trash Bar, which I previously noted would be closing in Williamsburg and moving to Bushwick hung on to its 256 Grand Street location longer than originally planned.  But the venue will finally close its doors there this Saturday, June 27th.  There is no information concerning where or when it will reopen.

Midtown Live

Midtown Live opened last fall.  But it looks like that venue will not continue as a roots and rock n roll club.  Earlier this month, there were only a couple of shows on the calendar and none after this coming Friday, June 26th.  The club’s website is no more and will take you to another club at the same address.  I think this place is toast.

So much for closings.  On the plus side, clubs continue to open in Bed-Sty.

Bar Lunatico

Bar Lunatico has been open for several months.  It presents music nightly, but only one act per night.  It’s located at 486 Halsey Street between  Stuyvesant and Lewis Avenues.

Cmon Everybody

C’mon Everybody is brand new, having opened just a few weeks ago.  It has three rooms: a front bar, a side lounge and a back music room.  I was there a few weeks ago to see the amazing Karli Bruce and her band.  The room sounds great and is very reminiscent of the set up at Crown Heights’ Friends and LoversC’mon Everybody is located at 325 Franklin Avenue between Clifton Place and Greene Avenue and is two blocks away from the Classon Avenue G Train stop.
