If you are still in NYC during this long holiday weekend, here’s a wonderful early evening doubleheader at Joe’s Pub. It consists of two acts that don’t play here all that much and which are well worth your while to catch.
First up are Winterpills, a Northampton, Massachusetts based band. They play ambient rock, often called chamber pop. But don’t think that means they are a quiet band; as I often tell people, what Winterpills do is play quiet music loudly. And make no mistake, they rock out as well, especially on their song Broken Arm. Winterpills only play a few dates in NYC each year, and after playing The Living Room a few weeks ago are back tonight.
Headlining the show tonight will be the amazingly voiced Syd Straw. Syd has sung back up with Pat Benatar, fronted The Golden Palominos and put out one of my all time favorite rock albums, War and Peace. Syd now lives in a small town in Vermont and is in New York City only infrequently. So take this opportunity to see a totally unique talent.
