Advance Planning: April 2015 Music Calendar

March 30, 2015

Calendar3

No fooling: Wednesday is April and therefore here’s the April Music Calendar.  It’s a pretty good month for music.  Steve Wynn will play with his long time band The Miracle 3 for the first time in a couple of years.  Amy Speace is in town for three shows next week.  And of course, that’s just the tip of the musical iceberg.  As for the calendar, the usual ground rules apply: listings are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As usual, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.

Tonight: The Great Harmony Swap – Brill Era Blast at The Treehouse at 2A

March 29, 2015

Great Harmony Swap Brill Era

On the last Sunday of the month, Tom Clark, who runs  The Treehouse at 2A, turns the programming over to Monica “Li’l Mo” Passin.  The result is the series called the Field of Stars (originally held at the late and lamented Banjo Jim’s).

Tonight’s show is a doozy, with at least 28 musicians – solos, duos and combos – performing a generous helping of songs that spring from The Brill Building and environs way back in the 60s.

Joining Li’l Mo tonight will be Lianne Smith, Gene Casey, Thirsty Dave, Dina Regine, Sherryl Marshall, Tom Clark, Crystal Durant, Lisa Lowell, C. P. Roth, Homeboy Steve, Drina Seay, Rembert Block, George Gilmore, Emily Duff, Dave Foster, Elena Sky, Tom Gould, Boo Reiners, Bibi Farber, Scott Aldrich, Susan D, Mary Lee Kortes, Leslie Wagner, Amy Allison, Cid Scantlebury, Mary Spencer Knapp, Courtney Lee Adams, Jr., Lisa Zweir and even more!

The fun gets going at 8:30pm, but it’s going to be crowded up at The Treehouse, so getting there early is highly recommended.

The Great Harmony Swap – Brill Era Blast, Treehouse at 2A, 25 Avenue A at 2nd Street (F Train to Delancey Street or 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit or J Train to Essex Street), 8:30pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly encouraged)

Breaking: DJ Vin Scelsa Announces His Retirement

March 28, 2015

vinscelsa

Vin Scelsa, whose career as a DJ on New York City radio spans more than 40 years announced Saturday night that he will be retiring from radio.  Vin said that his last show on WFUV will be on Saturday May 2nd, while his last show on Sirius XM will take place on Thursday April 28th.

Vin’s career has taken him around the dial.  At one time or another, he has had shows on WFMU, WABC-FM (which changed call letters to WPLJ during his stay there), WNEW-FM, WLIR, WXRK (K-Rock) and for the last 14 years, WFUV.  At each one of those stations, Vin had the same deal: he could play what he wanted, he could interview who he wanted and speak as long as he wanted, without interference from management.

Vin has said that he was the last person to be a free form DJ in radio and that after him, there would be no more.  That is clearly the case.

Eric “Roscoe” Ambel – Walk Away Renee

March 28, 2015

Eric Roscoe Ambel Walk Away Renee

Michael Brown of the band The Left Banke whose song Walk Away Renee was a big hit way back in 1965 died earlier this week.  In tribute, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel recorded this instrumental version of that song.  And yes, Roscoe is still in his pajamas.
