Photo Recap: Julia Haltigan at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

January 31, 2015

When I found myself standing right at the stage last night at Julia Haltigan‘s show at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, I took out my phone and started taking pictures.  It turned out to be the right thing to do, as I got enough shots to share with you today.  Julia recently moved to a classic four piece band (two guitars, bass and drums) and a more rocking sound.  This is the first set of photos I’ve taken of Julia playing in this configuration.

Damnwells 2015

The Damnwells have a new album due out in April.  The first song from it made its way out on to the Internet yesterday.  It’s called Lost.  Listening to it, I don’t think that it’s too early to start thinking about the best of songs of 2015 list.  Just click on the player below to hear it.

Advance Planning: February 2015 Music Calendar

January 29, 2015

Calendar3

It’s almost February and therefore time for the February Music Calendar.  The usual ground rules apply: listings on the calendar are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As usual, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.

Tonight: Jeff Litman at The Rockwood Music Hall

January 28, 2015

JeffLitman crop

Here’s an early show for those who really don’t like to stay out late.  But this show is really early.  At 6pm, Jeff Litman will take the original stage at The Rockwood Music Hall.  Jeff’s stock in trade is melodic rock and power pop, and he’ll be joined tonight by a full band.  Jeff doesn’t play often enough for my tastes, so take advantage of tonight’s opportunity to see him.  And since Jeff originally hails from Minnesota, I’m sure all the ice and snow out that won’t phase him in the least.

Jeff LitmanRockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 6pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Tonight: Misty Boyce on Live on Your Computer via Concert Window

January 27, 2015

Misty Boyce Rockwood May 2013 2 crop

It’s still snowing as I write this on Tuesday morning, but the “storm of historic proportions” has been downgraded to the snow of the week.  Things are starting to get back to normal, and I would guess that much (although perhaps not all) of what was planned tonight will go on.  But it’s still really cold and icy out there, so I’m going to suggest staying home and checking out some live music via your computer.

Singer-songwriter Misty Boyce, a long time Now I’ve Heard Everything favorite is playing a show tonight via Concert Window.  Misty has just released The Life, her second full length record.  Misty plays guitar, piano and is an accomplished vocalist with a wide ranging voice.  She’s made large numbers of fans in New York City during her time here, and has made many more playing with Sara Bareilles  over the past two years.  Misty now lives in Los Angeles, so this is a great opportunity to see her.  And no cold weather gear is necessary.  The show starts at 8:30pm.

Misty Boyce on Concert Window, 8:30pm, pay something but pay what you wish

Tonight: Rosie Flores at Hill Country NY

January 26, 2015

Rosie Flores 1

UPDATE: This show has been canceled because of the blizzard.

Rosie Flores is in town tonight at Hill County NY.  If you’ve ever heard Rosie, you’ll be there.  If you are unfamiliar with her, here’s the pertinent info; Rosie is based in Austin, a town where rock, Americana and alt country all seem to blend together.  Rosie herself plays country/alt country/electric blues/rock n roll and rockabilly in a style that can sometimes even call to mind Stevie Ray Vaughan.  Although no stranger to New York (the photo above was taken when she dropped in on Li’l Mo and The Monicats on night a few years back), Rosie is not here often enough. So take this opportunity to see her.  Of course all this assumes that the weather is not totally horrible, that mass transit is running, and that the show goes on.  You should probably check the latest forecast and with the MTA and Hill County NY before you venture forth.

Rosie FloresHill County NY, 30 W. 26th Street between 6th Avenue and Broadway (F, M or R Trains to 23rd Street), 9pm (For dinner reservations, please call 212-255-4544, and let the host know you would like to be seated in the music area), No Cover
