Tonight: Elizabeth and The Catapult and Dear Georgiana at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

December 31, 2014

elizabeth-and-the-catapult-2014-650x400

If you don’t have any plans for the earlier part of this New Years Eve (starting at 8pm), he’s a great two act show for you to catch for not a lot of money at The Rockwood Music Hall.

First up on Stage 2  will be Elizabeth and The Catapult.  You can expect keyboard based idiosyncratic classical tinged pop, songs from the band’s album released earlier this year.  That record was one of Now I’ve Heard Everything’s Top Albums of 2014.  Elizabeth also likes to throw in some inspired covers as well.  I never leave one of Elizabeth’s shows without having being uplifted by the music.

Following Elizabeth and The Catapult will be Dear Georgiana.  Call their music atmospheric folk-rock that’s melodic with very nice vocals.  Dear Georgiana is led by Lauren Balthrop, who also plays in Elizabeth and The Catapult.  Elizabeth Ziman frequently joins Dear Georgiana as well, and should be part of the band tonight.

Elizabeth and The Catapult and Dear Georgiana, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 8pm, $10

Advance Planning: January 2015 Music Calendar

December 30, 2014

Calendar3

It’s time for the January Music Calendar.  The usual ground rules apply: listings on the calendar are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As usual, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.

Tonight: Elliott Murphy (Solo) at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3

December 29, 2014

Although Elliot Murphy is originally from Long Island, he moved to France 20 years ago.  Back in the 70s, Elliott played around these parts a good deal.  These days Elliott makes it to New York City once or twice a year to play.

Elliott’s music is straight ahead rock with interesting, literate lyrics.  He’s held in high regard by other musicians, and special guests on his albums have included Bruce Springsteen, Mick Taylor, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Sonny Landreth, David Johansen, The Violent Femmes, Cindy Bullens and Shawn Colvin.

Although Elliott’s appearance in New York City have been with The Normandy All Stars (his current band), tonight’s show is just Elliott solo.  Given Elliott’s story-telling songs, his dynamic guitar playing and his easy rapport with an audience, this is certainly a show worth your time and attention.

Elliott MurphyRockwood Stage 3, 185 Orchard Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 8pm, $20, with a $10 drink minimum

Music Video: Interrobang and Secret Someones – Can’t Stand Losing You (Live)

December 28, 2014

Interrrobang Sec Some Cant

Interrobang, a new band with Martin Rivas, Chris Kuffner and Zach Jones played their first gig at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 on Friday night.  They were joined for two songs by Bess Rogers, Lelia Broussard and Hannah Winkler.  So all of Secret Someones was on stage for this cover of I Can’t Stand Losing You (from The Police).  Photographer Manish Gosalia was there to capture this as it happened.

Tonight: Jahn Xavier and The Bowerytones at Beast of Bourbon

December 27, 2014

Jahn Xavier Harley Davidson 6-3-14 1

Jahn Xavier is a New York original.  Jahn’s music is intelligent, rocking and soulful.  In fact, the record that he made with his band, The Bowerytones, last year, Yes, You, was one of Now I’ve Heard Everything’s Best Albums of 2013.

Tonight is Jahn and the band head back to Beast of Bourbon which is near the G Train in Bed-Sty.  This is absolutely, positively their last show for 2014 and they’ve put together a good one.  And of course, Beast of Bourbon features BBQ, 42 draft beers and over 40 bourbons.  So between the food, the drink and the music, you’ll have a great time tonight.

Jahn Xavier and The BowerytonesBeast of Bourbon, 710 Myrtle Avenue between Walworth and Spencer Streets (G Train to Myrtle – Willoughby), 10pm-Midnight, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Tonight: Triple Play with Jessi Mechanic, Jeff Litman and Interrobang

December 26, 2014

Choices Large

To quote Meat Loaf, two out of three ain’t bad.  There are three shows tonight and seeing two of them is easy. I suppose you can even make all three by grabbing a cab from The Rockwood to The Bitter End.  Here’s the scoop:

When I saw Jessi Mechanic last year with her old band, she rocked, with a bit of a New Wave feel.  So she’s perfect to start out the night.  She’ll hit the stage at the original The Rockwood Music Hall at 7pm.

Moving a bit to the north, you’ll  find Jeff Litman.   Tonight at 8pm, Jeff will bring his power pop and rock to The Bitter End.  At this show, Jeff will be playing as a duo with Joseph Brent on mandolin.

Finally, back at The Rockwood, but this time at Rockwood Stage 2, you’ll be able to see the premiere performance of Interrobang.  This new group consists of Zach Jones, Chris Kuffner and Martin Rivas.  They will (a) definitely rock, and (b) be joined by Secret Someones on vocals (since Zach is a member of both bands, that means Bess Rogers, Lelia Broussard and Hannah Winker).  This show will get going at 10:30pm.

Jessi MechanicThe Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 7pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Jeff Litman, The Bitter End, 147 Bleecker Street between Thompson Street and LaGuardia Place (A, B, C, D, E, F or M Trains to West 4th Street or 6 Train to Bleecker Street), 8pm

Interrobang with Zach Jones, Chris Kuffner, Martin Rivas, Rockwood Stage 2,  196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 10:30pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians band is highly recommended)
