Tonight is one of those nights. There are five really solid shows, with three opposite each other. Three of the shows are on the various stages of The Rockwood Music Hall and two of them are on the main stage at The Bowery Electric. You can catch only two or three of them, but remember, when you have many good choices in front of you, whatever you choose will be a good choice.
I’ll start with the shows over at The Rockwood Music Hall. Austin-based Jess Klein comes to town for a way too infrequent visit bringing her passionate Americana to Rockwood Stage 3. Jess’s album issued earlier this year, Learning Faith, is highly recommended, and I’m sure her show tonight will draw from the songs on it. Opening up this show will be Jessie Torrisi, who is new to me. Things get going at Rockwood Stage 3 at 7pm.
Upstairs around 9pm, you’ll find two of the three shows which are opposite each other. Over at the original stage at The Rockwood Music Hall, Joy Askew will be playing the first of three shows of entirely different music. Joy’s guest at this show will be Gray McMurray, and in addition Misty Boyce might be there to sing along with Joy as well.
Over at Rockwood Stage 2, Karla Moheno will play starting at 9:15pm. If you are not yet familiar with Karla, take this opportunity to see her. She plays rock, blues and ballads. Karla’s songs are her own compositions and they are quite impressive.
Meanwhile, a few blocks west and north, at The Bowery Electric, Dina Regine releases her new album, Right On, Alright. I’ve had a chance to listen to Dina’s new album, and it is a wonderful collection, full of songs which harken back to the best of the 60s. This is a full band show with horns, the best possible way to bring Right On Alright into the world.
Then, at 10pm, Dina will turn the stage over to Ursa Minor, which consists of Michelle Casillas (guitar, vocals), Tony Scherr (guitar), Rob Jost (bass) and Robert Di Pietro (drums). Call their music atmospheric indie rock played by top caliber musicians. Tonight, Ursa Minor will be releasing a new single, Moon Media Sessions. Moon Media Sessions is a rare stripped down duo performance with Michelle and Tony recorded live and filmed for the Moon Media Sessions video debut.
