Tonight: Ursa Minor at The Bowery Electric or Dear Georgiana at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

July 31, 2014

Choices Large

The old Lovin’ Spoonful song, Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind, applies to tonight.  There are two excellent but very different bands playing opposite each other, so as the song says, you’ll have to pick up on one and leave the other behind.

Ursa Minor consists of Michelle Casillas (guitar, vocals), Tony Scherr (guitar),  who tonight will be joined by Jeff Hill (bass) and Alex Wyatt (drums).  Call their music atmospheric indie rock played by top caliber musicians.  Expect to hear a mix of songs tonight including ones on their very good last record, Showface.  Since the band has been working on a new album, expect to hear some new songs too.  This all takes place at The Bowery Electric starting at 8:30pm.

But nearly at the same time, 9pm, Dear Georgiana will be taking the stage at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2.  Call their music atmospheric folk-rock that’s melodic with very nice vocals.  Dear Georgiana is led by Lauren Balthrop, who also plays in Elizabeth and The Catapult.  Elizabeth Ziman, the Elizabeth in that band, frequently joins Dear Georgiana as well, and should be part of the band tonight.

Ursa MinorThe Bowery Electric, 327 Bowery between 2nd and 3rd Streets (6 Train to Bleecker Street or Astor Place, F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 2nd Avenue exit), 8:30pm, $10

Dear Georgiana, Rockwood Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for each band is highly recommended)

Tonight: Goodbye to Michaela Anne and to The Ding Dong Lounge

July 30, 2014

Choices Large

Tonight is one of those night where there are  actually too many good shows. If you wish, you can check out all of them here on the July calendar.  But I wanted to focus on the two goodbyes (hopefully only for now) that are occurring tonight.

Michaela AnneMichaela Anne vertical, the Americana and alt country singer-songwriter, has been a favorite here at Now I’ve Heard Everything for a while now.  Earlier this year, she released a wonderful album, Ease My Mind.  Even The New York Times listened up and took note of her.  Tonight is the last night that Michaela Anne will be a resident of New York City (she leaves for Nashville in the morning), and she’ll spend it at Union Pool with her band.  I certainly recommend that you spend part of this evening there too.

Ding Dong Lounge Night of Living DingTonight is also the last night over The Ding Dong Lounge at its current location, 105th Street and Columbus Avenue.  The Ding Dong perhaps embodies the best that the term dive bar has to offer, and has hosted some fine shows over the past couple of years, often picking up bands that would have played The Lakeside Lounge had that dive bar stayed in business.

Although no bands are on the Ding Dong’s schedule tonight, DJ La La Linda and VJ Linear Regression will be holding down the fort, playing records and projecting videos from 10pm until the early hours of the morning.  Why not stop by, have a drink and say so long to the old Ding Dong Lounge (a new Ding has been promised in short order).

Michaela Anne and the Wild HeartsUnion PoolUnion Pool, 484 Union Avenue at Meeker Street (G Train to Metropolitan Avenue or L Train to Lorimer Street), 10pm, $10

Ding Dong Lounge, 929 Columbus Avenue between 105th and 106th Streets (C or 1 Trains to 103rd Street), No Cover

Music Video: Michaela Anne – Lift Me Up (Live)

July 29, 2014

Michaela Anne

It’s not the best week for live music in New York City.  The Rodeo Bar closed for good on Saturday night, The Ding Dong Lounge will be doing the same tomorrow night and, as I’ve recently learned, Americana singer-songwriter Michaela Anne will be leaving the area to relocate in Nashville on Thursday.

There’s one more Michaela Anne show here before she moves – Wednesday at Union Pool.  But whether you can make that show or not, let’s watch this video of Michaela Anne and her band playing Lift Me Up.  It was shot at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 last April.

Advance Planning: August 2014 Music Calendar

July 28, 2014

Calendar3

Since Friday is August, here is the monthly music calendar for August 2014.  Listings on the calendar are for venues in New York City and for bands that I can personally recommend or which I have reason to believe are worthwhile.  All shows listed here are free or have tickets which cost $40 or less. I’ve tried to list the set time for each band.  If all I have is a time when the show starts or when doors open, I’ll list that and so note it.  As usual, this calendar will be updated from time to time during the coming month.

Music Video: Weird Al Yankovic – Word Crimes

July 27, 2014

Word Crimes

Weird Al Yankovic has the number one album in the country this week.  This song from it, Word Crimes is here not because of the music but because of the lyrics.  We all know someone who needs to see this short form grammar lesson.
