Tonight: Poundcake at Dinosaur BBQ Brooklyn

November 30, 2013

Long time Now I’ve Heard Everything favorites Poundcake is made up of Teddy Thompson (guitar and vocals), Jeff Hill (bass and vocals) and Ethan Eubanks (drums and vocals).  They play rockabilly and early rock ‘n’ roll covers.  Poundcake is always great fun and the band has a knack for picking great songs and playing them with verve.

Still need more convincing that this is the show to see tonight? Then have a look at this live video from Poundcake playing It’s So Easy and Brown-Eyed Handsome Man.

Poundcake, Dinosaur BBQ Brooklyn, 604 Union Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues (R Train to Union Street), 10pm, No Cover

Happy Thanksgiving (and Hanukkah Too)

November 28, 2013

Happy Thanksgiving, and unusually for November, Hanukkah too, from Now I’ve Heard Everything.  NIHE will be taking today off just like everyone else, but will be back in action on Friday.  Be sure to check back then.

Tonight: Mikal Evans at Spike Hill

November 27, 2013

Mikal Evans at The Rockwood

For those of you who have not left NYC for Thanksgiving, here’s an early show over in Williamsburg at Spike Hill (which also has an above average beer selection).  Mikal Evans plays there at 8pm.  Mikal stock in trade is straight ahead rock with strong vocals, boisterous electric guitar, ambient, moody music and lyrics worth a second listen.  Most of Mikal’s shows lately have been solo, but tonight she is joined by a full band.  That makes this show especially worth seeing.

Mikal Evans, Spike Hill, 184 & 186 Bedford Avenue between N. 6th & N. 7th Streets, Brooklyn (L Train to Bedford Avenue) 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

News and Notes

November 26, 2013

Rough Trade NYC

Some good news for a change: Rough Trade, a venerable English record store, has opened here, in Williamsburg.  The Brooklyn outpost is a record store and a music venue.  The concert space will by run by Bowery Presents and it opens this weekend with two shows by Television (both are sold out).  There will also be in-store shows as well, and this Saturday afternoon Now I’ve Heard Everything favorite Phosphorescent will be playing there at 3pm.

Elizabeth Trying to Break Your Heart

If you like Elizabeth and The Catapult, or would like to get to know this wonderful NYC based band, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do so over the next couple of months.  Elizabeth announced last night that the Monday night E & The C residency at Rockwood Stage 3 will continue through the month of December, with some shows also at Rockwood Stage 2.  And there will be a record release show at The Mercury Lounge in January for the new Elizabeth and The Catapult record,  Like It Never Happened.

Tonight: Triple Header at The Rockwood Music Hall

November 25, 2013

RockwoodTonight, visit each of the three stages of the Rockwood Music Hall to get this shortened week off to a great start.

Stage 3: Elizabeth and The Catapult will conclude their November Monday residency at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3 tonight.  The small, intimate seated club has a piano but no drums.  You can expect keyboard based idiosyncratic classical tinged pop, songs from the forthcoming Elizabeth and The Catapult album, Like It Never Happened, and perhaps an unexpected cover or two.  Elizabeth gets going at 8pm.

Stage 2: At 9pm, leave Stage 3, head upstairs and through the corridor to Rockwood Stage 2.  There, Sonya Kitchell will provide the next hour’s music.  She’s working on a new album, so expect some new material.  Sonya is playing with a band tonight.

Stage 1: Jim Campilongo continues his long running Monday night residency, recently moved into the original Rockwood Music Hall.  Joining Jim tonight, as they do on most Monday nights, will be Chris Morrissey on bass and Josh Dion on drums.  Also taking part in tonight’s music will be Nels Cline from Wilco.  These Monday night sessions are an exploration of the instrumental side of music.

Elizabeth and The Catapult, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3, 185 Orchard Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 8pm, $8 plus $10 drink minimum

Sonya Kitchell, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)
