Music Video: Bobby “Boris” Pickett – Monster Mash

October 31, 2013

Monster Mash 45

It’s Halloween, so it’s time to pull out Bobby “Boris” Pickett‘s Monster Mash.  Originally at hit back in 1962, it also charted in 1970 and 1973.  Bobby Pickett co-wrote the song and was also an actor, who appeared in a number of movies.  I saw Bobby in an off-off Broadway play, Rat’s Nest, back in 1979.

Music Video: Sara Bareilles – The Way You Look Tonight

Sara Bareilles Radio City 2013

And now for something completely different.  Here’s Sara Bareilles at Radio City Music Hall singing the standard The Way You Look Tonight.  Not only does this video show off the range of Sara, but it also contains the wonderful keyboard work of long time Now I’ve Heard Everything favorite Misty Boyce.  Given that Misty studied jazz piano at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, her stand out piano here should not be surprising.

Breaking: Lou Reed Dead at 71

October 27, 2013

Lou Reed

Rolling Stone has reported that Lou Reed died today (Sunday) at the age of 71.  No cause of death was given, but Lou had undergone a liver transplant in May of this year.

Lou’s contribution to music are many, starting with his work in The Velvet Underground and continuing through his decades long solo career.  The Rolling Stone report has a nice, concise review of Lou’s career.

Over the years I’ve come to view Lou as a local musician, albeit a very artistically successful one.  Although I never met him, he was always around, our paths crossing but never quite intersecting.  I was at the earlier of the two shows which became his live record, Rock N Roll Animal.  I heard reports of him talking to a local merchant about the vitamins he was taking.  One night when I was leaving The Living Room, I passed him coming into the club (and I was told he ended up in the seat I had just vacated).  And a few summers ago at Celebrate Brooklyn, after Lou had finished his song at a tribute to Doc Pomus, he and his wife, Laurie Anderson, sat on a couple of folding chairs a few feet away from me, just hanging out and watching the show.

As I mentioned, I never met Lou, but as it turns out, my mother did.  Mom’s boss had sold Lou an insurance policy and Lou had to come into the office to sign some of the application forms.

I found the following clip of Lou performing one of his best know songs, Sweet Jane, at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn in 2006.  I find it a fitting way to remember Lou today.

Music Video: Freddie Stevenson – Don’t Fall in Love

October 27, 2013

Freddie Stevenson Bowery Ballroom

Long time Now I’ve Heard Everything favorite Freddie Stevenson has been on tour for the past few months, opening for The Waterboys.  That tour pulled into The Bowery Ballroom this week.  From Friday night’s show there, here’s a video of Freddie singing Don’t Fall in Love, joined by  Teddy Kumple on banjo and vocals and Julia Haltigan on guitar and vocals.  Many thanks to coneyislandgirl930, better known as Gail Prusslin, for being there to record this.
