Here’s a rather large update to the February music calendar.  But for the fact that the Internet service where I was staying last weekend left much to be desired, most of this would have been included in the music calendar originally.  But I have included it in the main February 2013 music calendar as I would any update.

Photo Recap: Kathleen Edwards at City Winery Jan. 30, 2013 (With Set List)

January 31, 2013

Kathleen Edwards came into town yesterday and played the first of two sold out shows at City Winery. Kathleen is playing with a trio this time, made up of herself, Jim Bryson (on keys and guitar) and Gordon Tough (on guitar and mandolin).  While it would be accurate to say that Kathleen was playing stripped down versions of her songs, those songs were really only stripped down a little.  Kathleen did play two songs solo acoustic (Mint and I Make the Dough) in the middle of the show and the show ended with her, Jim and Gord standing at the edge of the stage playing unamplified acoustic guitars (12 Bellevue and Sidecar).  The set list follows the photos.

Sera Cahoone opened the show.  Her 30 minute set was full of wonderfully crafted alt country songs made clear that she’s someone to keep an eye on.

News and Notes: Harper Blynn Say Good Bye to The Living Room

January 30, 2013

Harper Blynn Living Room 1-29-13

Harper Blynn played the first of two sold out shows at The Living Room last night.  Long a fixture on the New York scene (originally as Pete and J and sometimes Hans und Sven) the band moved to Los Angeles permanently last year.  Although Pete Harper, J Blynn, Whynot Jansveld and Sarab Singh were all in New York City, there were no plans for the band to play shows.  But when they learned that The Living Room was closing at this location, they quickly scheduled a show (which became two shows).  Since they didn’t bring their instruments to NYC this time, all their equipment was borrowed.

Last night’s show contained old Harper Blynn favorites, a bunch of new songs, tight harmonies and the excellent all around musicianship for which Harper Blynn is known. The Harper Blynn portion of the show ran around 90 minutes.

Opening the show were Chris Morrissey and Rich Hinman.  This duo played stripped down versions of songs usually played by Chris’s  band Taurus, with Chris swapping his usual bass for an amplified acoustic guitar.

The Living Room removed a row of tables and chairs to accommodate more people.  Spotted in some of those remaining seats were Pete’s parents and Poundcake drummer Ethan Eubanks.

Harper Blynn will return tonight to do this all again.  Opening this time will be Sara Bareilles (who joined Harper Blynn for a song last night) and Puss N Boots (Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper).  Like last night, the show is sold out.

Update: Jim Campilongo and Scott Metzger will open instead of Sara Bareilles.

Tonight: Ana Egge at The Rockwood Music Hall, Arum Rae at The 11th Street Bar and The Strummerville Benefit at The Bowery Electric

January 29, 2013

Choices LargeIf you looked at the January music calendar,  you have noticed that there are a bunch of sold out shows over the next few days.  However, there are some good shows which are still available to you, particualrly tonight.

Over at The Rockwood Music HallAna Egge and The Ohiomen will take the stage at 8pm.  You can expect to hear songs from Ana’s last album, which was produced by Steve Earle, in the set set of Americana roots rock.

A bit further uptown at The 11th Street Bar, Arum Rae will play between 9 and 11pm.  Recently moved to NYC, Arum is a singer and songwriter (she has cowritten material with The Civil WarsJohn Paul White and Steve McEwan of Melody Kills).  I’ve seen Arum play several shows recently and in those shows her songs have run the gamut between indie rock and blues. In any event, Arum will grab your attention.

Finally, at 11pm, over at The Bowery Electric, the late show (the early show is sold out) of  Strummerville, a benefit concert to celebrate the life and music of Joe Strummer and The Clash begins.  The house band for the show will feature Todd Youth, Tad Kubler, Sam Hopkins, Michael Wildwood, Randy Schrager, Catherine Popper and Derek Cruz, with performances by Ivan Julian, Brian Fallon, H.R., Jesse Malin, Joseph Arthur, Willie Nile, Jeffrey Gaines, Shannon Funchess, Matthew Ryan, Michelle Casillas, Walter Lure, So So Glos, Vanessa Bley, Felice Rosser, Jasno Swarez, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Leo Mintek, Jack Ridley III, The Young Things, Mick Stitch, Mike Montali, Jenny Jenny and a spoken word performance by Bob Gruen.

This show will benefit Strummerville, a charity set up by the friends and family of Joe Strummer in the year after his death, which offers support, resources and performance opportunities to artists who would not normally have access to them.

Ana Egge, Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Arum Rae, 11th Street Bar, 510 E. 11th Street between Avenues A &B (Any train to 14th Street or L Train to 1st Avenue, then transfer to the 14 A bus to 11th Street), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Strummervile, The Bowery Electric, 327 Bowery between 2nd and 3rd Streets (6 Train to Bleecker Street or Astor Place, F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 2nd Avenue exit), 11pm, $30

Music Video: Harper Blynn – Bound to Break

January 27, 2013

Harper Blynn have come back east from Los Angeles and this week will play two big shows (Tuesday and Wednesday night) at The Living Room. That seems a good enough excuse to post this official video of the band taken at The Highline Ballroom two years ago.

Music Video: Richard Thompson with Dawes – Calvary Cross

January 26, 2013

Leave aside for a second the fact that this video was recorded on a cruise (the now legendary Cayamo cruise).  Just settle in and watch Richard Thompson play like nobody else.  And Dawes acting as his band isn’t all that shabby either.
