News and Notes

November 30, 2012

NIHE N Logo 2012Misty Boyce has formed a new band.  It includes Chris Cubeta on guitar, Jay Foote on bass and Rob Heath on drums.  They’ll be playing at The Rockwood Music Hall on December 12th.  Joy Askew will guest as well, and Misty has promised that the gig will be mostly brand new songs.  But Misty’s other band, (is) boy is not going away: there will be an (is) boy show at The Rockwood on January 5th.

NIHE N Logo 2012

Erez and the End put out a fine EP,  Silent Mountains, earlier this year.  The band will be going into the studio this coming February to follow that up by recording their first full length album.  The band is playing some new songs (which will likely make it to that new record) and they are pretty tasty.

NIHE N Logo 2012

Fans of The Del Lords, will have to wait just a bit longer for their new album, their first in over two decades.  That record, titled Elvis Club, has been pushed back into 2013.  Those who need a Del Lords fix sooner should head over to The Rock Shop in Park Slope on Dec. 11, where the band will be playing a short set at the Benefit for Mark Spencer.

Tonight: George Usher and Lisa Burns at ZirZamin and Lydia Loveless at The Studio at Webster Hall

November 29, 2012

Here are two shows which you can catch tonight.  The times of these shows make it easy to catch both of them if you wish.

George Usher may not be a household name.  But he has been playing in bands, writing songs producing other musicians since he hit the New York area more than 30 years ago, including The Decoys, Beat Rodeo, Richard Barone, Kate Jacobs, The Schramms and Edward Rogers.  George’s songs work well no matter how they are arranged or rearranged: Laura Cantrell chose George’s song Not The Tremblin’ Kind to be the title cut of her debut alt country record.  His 2009 album, To Have and Not Have is a song cycle which follows a relationship from its optimistic beginnings until its break up conclusion.  George is performing again after a hiatus of two years, and is joined tonight by Lisa Burns.

Lydia Loveless is back int town from her native Ohio.  Lydia’s music is an amalgam of rock, Americana, alt country with some punk thrown into the mix as well.  This looks like it will be a duo show consisting of Lydia and her bass player.  I caught Lydia in that configuration when she was in town  this summer.  Lydia was one of my highlights at SXSW earlier this year.

Update: This is a full band show!!

George Usher and Lisa BurnsZirZamin, 90 W. Houston Street  between Laguardia Place and Thompson Street (B, D, F, or M Trains to Broadway – Lafayette or N or Q Trains to Prince Street), 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Lydia Loveless, The Studio at Webster Hall, 125 East 11th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues (N, Q, 4, 5 or 6 Trains to 14th Street or L Train to 3rd Avenue), 11pm, $12

Tonight: Sad Bastard at The 11th Street Bar or Kelli Scarr at The Way Station

November 28, 2012

The choice sign is up again, which means tonight there is a choice to two very different shows in different parts of NYC.  At The 11th Street Bar in the East Village, you’ll find Sad Bastard, the acoustic combination of Charlene McPherson and Mo Goldner of the amazing band, Spanking Charlene.  Opening for Charlene and Mo will be Nate Schweber, whose full band is The New Heathens.  The music starts at 9pm.

Meanwhile over in Brooklyn, in Prospect Heights, Kelli Scarr will be playing at The Way Station, the only bar I know that has a Tardis (as seen in Dr. Who) as a rest room.  Instead of playing her usual alt country original songs tonight, Kelli will be paying tribute to Patsy Cline by playing Patsy’s songs.  Kelli and her band will be taking the stage at 10pm.

Sad Bastard (Nate Schweber opens), 11th Street Bar, 510 E. 11th Street between Avenues A &B (Any train to 14th Street or L Train to 1st Avenue, then transfer to the 14 A bus to 11th Street), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Kelli Scarr, The Way Station, 683 Washington Avenue between Prospect Place and St. Marks Avenue (2 or 3 Train to Eastern Parkway – Brooklyn Museum), 10pm

Tonight: Nick Africano at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

November 27, 2012

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Nick Africano will play a set at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 tonight at 11pm.  He’ll feature songs from his latest record, The Butterfly Bull, which has a very Jeff Buckley-like feel to it.  Nick has also been writing songs for a new record.  I’ve heard him play them recently, they are excellent.  Nick and his new band have recently been recording those new songs at Galuminum Foil Studios in Brooklyn.   I expect the new record will be released sometime in 2013.

Nick Africano, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 11pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the bands is highly recommended)
