Advance Planning: September 2012 Music Calendar (Added 8/30)

August 30, 2012

Sept. 1 – Thomas Bryan Eaton – Bar 4 – 8pm

Sept. 30 – Joy Askew – Rockwood Stage 2 – 9:15pm

Tonight: My Pet Dragon at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

August 30, 2012

My Pet Dragon is a favorite band around here, but they have been playing outside of New York City more than playing here recently.  Tonight that changes as  Todd Michaelsen (guitar, lead vocals), Reena Shah (backing vocals, percussion) Mario Padron (bass), Rajeev Maddela (drums) and Vincent Mascolo (guitar) appear at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 once again.

The album they released last year, Mountains and Cities, was one of the Now I’ve Heard Everything Best Albums of 2011.  Here’s what I said about it:

My Pet Dragon has taken elements from 80s synth pop and from that era’s U2 and combined them into anthemic and danceable rock.  This album includes two excellent songs previously issued on EPs last year, Lover in Hiding and Flow and adds more standouts including Majestic Lovers, Moonshine, Lightning Inside and Songbird.  This record sounds good turned up as well.

My Pet Dragon, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 10:30pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Tonight: (is) boy and Nick Africano at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

August 29, 2012

If you are able to stay out late tonight, there’s a very good double feature at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2. At 10:45pm, it will be time for (is) boy.  That’s the new name for the six piece band which has been around for nearly two years and which is led by Misty Boyce.  Tonight the band releases it’s first single from the album they have been recording.  It’s titled Circles, and it’s the song that the band has been opening with for a while now.  If you need a short description of (is) boy‘s music, call it keyboard based, synth flavored indie pop.  However you describe them, this band is tight.

Then at midnight, stick around, as Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Nick Africano will play a set.  He’ll feature songs from his latest record, The Butterfly Bull, which has a very Jeff Buckley-like feel to it.  Nick has also been writing songs for a new record.  I’ve heard him play them recently and they are excellent as well.

(is) boy, (10:45pm), Nick Africano, (Midnight), Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), Midnight, No Cover (but a contribution for the bands is highly recommended)

Late Afternoon: Get Some Poundcake in the Parking Lot Behind City Winery

August 28, 2012

Late this afternoon, at 5:30pm to be exact, the latest show in the 4th Annual Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival, the weekly free show held in the parking lot and loading dock space behind City Winery, will begin when long time Now I’ve Heard Everything favorites Poundcake takes the stage.  Poundcake is made up of Teddy Thompson (guitar and vocals), Jeff Hill (bass and vocals) and Ethan Eubanks (drums and vocals).  They play rockabilly and early rock ‘n’ roll covers.  Poundcake is always great fun and the band has a knack for picking great songs and playing them with verve.

Still need more convincing that this is the show to see tonight? Then have a look at this live video from Poundcake playing It’s So Easy and Brown-Eyed Handsome Man.

Poundcake, 4th Annual Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival (in the parking lot behind City Winery), 155 Varick Street between Spring and Vandam Streets (1 Train to Houston or Canal Streets, C or E Trains to Spring Street), 5:30pm, Free
