Tonight: Drina Seay at Otto’s Shrunken Head

March 31, 2012

I first saw Drina Seay (pronounced Sea) at the late, lamented Banjo Jim’s a few years back, mostly singing wonderful harmonies with the likes of Li’l Mo and The Monicats (and Drina has been working on Li’l Mo’s next record)  Drina has been playing with her own band for a while now.  Tonight you’ll find Drina and her band at Otto’s Shrunken Head, for an early show beginning at 7:30pm.  You can expect American, country and roots music.

Drina Seay, Otto’s Shrunken Head, 538 E. 14th Street (any train to 14th Street, then transfer to the 14D bus to Avenue B, or L Train to 1st Avenue), 7:30pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Advance Planning: April 2012 Music Calendar Update (Added 3/30)

March 30, 2012

The Rockwood Music Hall posted the rest of its April schedule so here are some dates there at the end of the month, plus some dates next week at The Living Room; even one on April 1st, no fooling.  As always, these new dates have been added to the main April 2012 Music Calendar.

Tonight: Julia Haltigan at The Rockwood Music Hall

March 30, 2012

Julia Haltigan and her band played The Brooklyn Indie Music Fest in September and absolutely demolished the place.  Julia sings, plays guitar and leads a large band through material that draws on rock, r&b, latin rhythms, 40s and 50s pop and more. Julia has said that she thinks she sounds like Nancy Sinatra singing Tom Waits, which isn’t a bad description if Tom was much more cheerful.

Tonight is the last night of Julia Haltigan’s month-long Friday night residency at The Rockwood Music Hall.  It also comes on the heels of her performance last week at Washington D. C.’s Kennedy Center, a video of which can be found here.

Julia Haltigan, Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 10pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Tonight: The Pierces at The Bowery Ballroom

March 29, 2012

The Pierces play The Bowery Ballroom tonight after two sold out shows at The Mercury Lounge two months ago, numerous appearances at SXSW this year and Jay Leno last night.  Tonight’s show coincides with the U. S. release (it’s been out in the U.K. for a while now) of their latest record, You and I (which, as of the date of this post, can be streamed in its entirety here).

If you are nor familiar with The Pierces, Allison and Catherine Pierce are two sisters who are originally from Alabama but who moved to New York City a while back.  They are in the U.K. quite a lot these days as they have had a nice bit of success over there.  Although their earlier material was more folk-rock and indie, their recent music is best described as rock.

The Pierces (Spirit Family Reunion opens), Bowery Ballroom, 6 Delancey St between Chrystie Street and The Bowery (F Train to Delancey Street or J, M or Z Trains to Essex Street), doors 8pm / show 9pm, $17

Tonight: Mary Lee’s Corvette at The Rodeo Bar (With Video)

March 28, 2012

Mary Lee’s Corvette, the band fronted by Mary Lee Kortes, hasn’t been around much lately.  But they make up for it tonight when they step upon the stage at Manhattan’s Rodeo Bar.  Perhaps best know for covering Bob Dylan’s album Blood on the Tracks, Mary Lee is a fine songwriter in her own right.  I’ve included a video below, of the the song More Stupider, off the MLC album 700 Miles.

Mary Lee’s Corvette, The Rodeo Bar, 375 Third Avenue at 28th Street (R or 6 Train to 28th Street), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)
