Monday Night Update: Martha Wainwright Moved and Misty Boyce Added to Rockwood Stage 2

January 31, 2011

Martha Wainwright

This just in: Martha Wainwright‘s last show of her January residency at The Rockwood Music Hall has been pushed back to 10pm and moved to the big room, Rockwood Stage 2.

Misty Boyce

And Misty Boyce has been added to the Rockwood Stage 2 bill at midnight.  All this should time out nicely with the Robbie Fulks show at The Mercury Lounge.  Quite a nice night of music on the Lower East Side.

Martha Wainwright (10pm), Misty Boyce (Midnight), The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), No Cover (but a contribution for the bands is highly recommended)

Tonight: Robbie Fulks at The Mecury Lounge

January 31, 2011

If you don’t know Robbie Fulks you should.  Call him country, alt country or whatever.  He plays a mean guitar and writes funny, clever and yes, even poignant songs.   If you read his blog, you’ll find that he’s probably one of the most literate musicians anywhere. Don’t just take my word for it.  The New York Times noted:

But what really sets him apart is his songwriting, which is one part artful country, one part artful sendup of country and one part a little of everything else.

Robbie is based in Chicago and only gets to New York a couple of times a year, so take this opportunity to see him.  Tonight’s show will feature Robbie in a duo format with Robbie Gjersoe.

Robbie Fulks, Mercury Lounge, 217 East Houston Street between Ludlow and Essex Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit, F Train to Delancey Street or J or M Trains to Essex Street), 7:30pm, $15

Tonight: Three Great Shows – But You Can Only See One

January 29, 2011

Tonight there are three excellent shows all running opposite each other.  That means you’ll have to make a choice, but when faced with three good choices, whatever choice you make will be a good one.  Your choices:

My Pet Dragon opens a triple bill at  Bowery Ballroom at 8:30pm.  MPD plays rock with some mid 80s influences; in addition backup singer Reena Shah’s Indian dancing keeps the band visually exciting.

Leslie Mendelson plays a solo show at the Rockwood Music Hall starting at 9pm.  Leslie’s past solo show have been piano based.   Her latest show with her new band, Melody Kills, have had Leslie away from the keyboard, so it will be interesting to see what she does tonight: I’m guessing a mix of piano and guitar.

The Ramblers play The Living Room at 9pm,  Their sound is basically straight ahead rock with some southern influences.  Tonight’s show will have strings and a horn section and it should be very interesting.

To recap:

My Pet Dragon, Bowery Ballroom, 6 Delancey St between Chrystie Street and The Bowery (F Train to Delancey Street or J, M or Z Trains to Essex Street), 8:30 pm, $15

Leslie Mendelson, The Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stantom Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

The Ramblers, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets, (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Music Video: The Louvin Brothers – I Can’t Keep You in Love with Me

January 28, 2011

If you are wondering why I’m posting a 50 year old country video today, it’s because Charlie Louvin, one half of The Louvin Brothers, died earlier this week after a bout with cancer.  The Louvin Brothers broke up in 1963, and Ira Louvin, the other half of the act, died in a car accident in 1965.  But Charlie kept recording and touring, on and off, right up to the end.

I got to see Charlie when he played New York City back in 2007.  Sitting next to me in the audience were musicians Dave Schramm and George Usher.  And Amy Rigby has said that she learned to sing harmony by listening to The Louvin Brothers.  Although Charlie’s voice had seen better days by then, his classic country songs, the love he got from the audience, his gentlemanly demeanor and cornball humor made it a wonderful show.

So I’ll say goodbye to Charlie with this video of the Louvin Brothers singing I Can’t Keep You in Love with Me.

Tonight: Lisa Lowell at Banjo Jim’s

January 27, 2011

My friend Big Dan has said that Lisa Lowell‘s album Beautiful Behavior was on the way to be his favorite record of 2011 (and that’s with the year less than 1/12 over).  Strong praise indeed.  I haven’t heard the album or seen Lisa performing these songs live yet, but I have seen her back up Garland Jeffreys; she’s also backed up Bruce Springsteen as well.  So given all that I’m taking the leap of faith and recommending this extra length show (8-10pm)  with some special guests at Banjo Jim’s.

Lisa Lowell, Banjo Jim’s, 700 East 9th Street – the entrance is on Avenue C (A, C, E, F, M, N or R Train to 14th Street or L Train to 1st Avenue, then transfer to M14D bus to 11th Street), 8-10pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly encouraged)

Freebies: Melody Kills – Nowhere Slow

January 26, 2011

Leslie Mendelson‘s 2009 album, Swan Feathers, made the Now I’ve Heard Everything  Best of Albums of 2009 listMelody Kills is her new project.  Leslie’s finished with the new record and is offering some tracks from that album to you absolutely free.  Nowhere Slow is the track I want to focus on.  It’s a totally infectious hook-filled piece of adult pop perfection.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t play it and then turn to something else; I have to play it a couple of times in a row before I move on.  Another song , Bombs Away, also from the new album is also available.  Just click here to go to the Melody Kills Facebook page music player and click download.  This will work even if you are not on Facebook.  Leslie is also playing a solo set at The Rockwood Music Hall this Saturday at 9pm.
