SXSW 2013: Wednesday’s Box Score

March 14, 2013

East 6th Street

Wednesday was a full day for me, running from 11:30am to 2am.  Here’s the rundown:

Band Sounds Like
Willie Nile Anthemic rock, from NYC.  A bracing way to start the day.  Along with his many staples, Willie played the title track of his forthcoming album, American Ride.  A hit for extra bases!
Chris Stamey Chris played songs from his new album, Lovesick Blues.  His band consisted electric guitar, bass, drums and flute.  It was the first time he played these songs with this configuration. I found this to be too sparse for the material, even though it was pleasant.
James McMurtry Played solo; an excellent guitarist
Shoes This band from the 70s who have recently regrouped and recorded a new album played new wave power pop with lots of harmonies.  Maybe no one sounds like this anymore, but they were very entertaining and the songs were infectious.
Nameless drone band playing in the dark Atmospheric and forgettable
Caitlin Rose Sound snafus during setup left Caitlin and her seven piece band playing beat the clock through her set.  Everything but the last song was from her excellent new album, The Stand-In.  Even though some songs on that album have a modern country sound, this was a rock set, albeit with a pedal steel guitar and some country-ish vocal touches. A hit!
Camper Van Beethoven Solid, if quirky rock, Americana and folk rock with instrumentation moving between three guitars and two guitars and a violin.
The Mastersons Playing in full band formation, The Mastersons played several new songs throughout their set.  As always, a hit.
Lord Huron This is the point where writing about music feels like dancing about architecture.  This band, made up of three guitars, bass and drums has a sound which is ease to like but hard to describe.  Atmospheric Americana? Hard rock Americana? Dawes with an edge?  Whatever you call them, they were a hit for extra bases.
Natalie Maines The lead singer for The Dixie Chicks played a set drawn from her forthcoming album. This material was far away from country, it was rock, electric blues and ballads.  Natalie and the band played and sang well and good an excellent response from the audience.

Finally, the evening ending set by Amy Speace deserves a special mention.  Amy was playing in Stephen F’s Bar, a new venue for SXSW this year.  There were some problems getting the sound right during set up.  Problems continued during Amy’s set with feedback being chief among them.  So Amy finished her set by standing on top of a table playing and singing without amplification, while her electric guitarist and cellist remained plugged in and on stage.  That worked, and no one who was there will forget that set, or Amy and her never say die attitude.

Tonight: Large Number of Choices, One Tough Decision

January 19, 2013

Choices Large

It’s one of those nights when there are a large number of good shows out there.  Depending on what you choose, you can see one, two or possibly three.  Here’s the rundown.

At City WineryAlejandro Escovedo and The Mastersons will reprise their show which I saw last night.  The Masterson, playing as a duo will feature songs from their fine roots rock album Birds Fly South plus some ones as well.  Alejandro Escovedo will lead his band The Sensitive Boys through songs drawn from all phases of Alejandro’s career.  The show will start at 8pm.

Also at 8pm, Richard Julian will bring his jazz-folk fusion tunes into the original stage at The Rockwood Music Hall.  Richard’s set is scheduled to go to 10pm.

Uptown in the Times Square area, Li’l Mo and The Monicats  will play Li’l Mo’s Birthday show at Connolly’s on 45th Street.  The show will start at 8:30pm, with Monica and the band playing rockabilly, honky-tonk country, r&b and swing.  Come early (7:30pm) if you’d like to get a dance lesson!

Alana Amram  can play and sing and tonight she’ll cook as well.  Head over to the Brooklyn Rod & Gun Club in Williamsburg, where at 9pm dinner will first be served by Alana.  That will be followed by music from Dawn Landes and then Alana Amram and The Rough Gems will provide the alt country.

Ulysses S. Grant is the name of a traditional country covers band with an all star cast: Pete Harper and J Blynn of Harper Blynn, Rich Hinman of many bands including The Madison Square Gardeners, Jim Campilongo, Chris Morrissey and Dan Reiser. Why the name Ulysses S. Grant? According to the band, it’s because USG was a great general and they are generally great.  The set get going at  The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 at 10:30pm.

Finally, Eric Ambel and Phil Cimino bring their guitar and drums duo, Gringoman into Otto’s Shrunken Head at midnight.

Here are all the details:

Tonight: Kevn Kinney and The Truckstop Revival at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

January 10, 2013

Rockwood

If you are a late night person, there’s a wonderful show at 11:45pm waiting for you at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2.  That’s the time and place where rock, Americana and alt country will all meet at The Truckstop Revival.  Hanging out at the truckstop tonight are Kevn Kinney of Drivin N Cryin, Aaron Lee Tasjan of the newly back in business Madison Square Gardeners as well as Enemies! and Taurus, The Mastersons who front a band of the same name and also play in Steve Earle‘s band The Dukes (and The Duchesses), ace drummer Anton Fier and Brett Bass (with whom I will admit I am not familiar).

I’m not sure who will play what.  But I do know that with this line up of top notch musicians, whatever is played, will be wonderful.

Kevn Kinney and The Truckstop Revival featuring Aaron Lee Tasjan, The Mastersons, Brett Bass and Anton Fier, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 11:45pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Tonight: Joy Askew and Leslie Mendelson at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

September 30, 2012

There’s a very nice double bill at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 tonight.  First up at 9:15pm is Joy Askew.  As I mentioned in my interview with Joy Askew (read part 1 here and part 2 here), her gorgeous album Drunk on You is keyboard based, atmospheric, rhythmically driven rock.  It was also one of Now I’ve Heard Everything’s Best Albums of 2011.  Tonight, Joy plays a full band show.  You can expect to hear many songs from DOY, some new songs and probably some from Joy’s earlier work.

Then at 10:15, Leslie Mendelson will take over the stage.  Whether performing under her own name or a part of the band Melody Kills, Leslie has long been a favorite of Now I’ve Heard Everything.  Tonight, Leslie will play her mostly piano-based songs (including some brand new ones) and will be joined during the show by The Mastersons and Steve McEwan.  This is Leslie’s last show before she heads over to England (where she’ll be for a while), so it is a must-see.

Joy Askew (9:15pm), Leslie Mendelson (10:15pm), Rockwood Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit, note that the Brooklyn bound F Train is not stopping at 2nd Avenue), No Cover (but a contribution for  each band is highly recommended)

Tonight: The Mastersons at The Mercury Lounge

September 24, 2012

Tonight’s show at The Mercury Lounge features The Mastersons, a band formed around Chris Masterson and Eleanor Masterson (nee Whitmore), a married couple who have had separate careers but have recently started performing together.  Chris was in Son Volt (version 2.0) and plays electric lead guitar; Eleanor plays acoustic guitar and fiddle and has performed with many folks including James Maddock and Kelly Willis and has a fine solo album out.  They’ve put together a band and written some new songs which range from rock to Americana.  Their debut album, Birds Fly South,  was officially released earlier this year and you can read the Now I’ve Heard Everything review of it here.

Tonight’s show will be the last Mastersons show in New York City in 2012.  So if you are in the city and have the time tonight, you really should drop everything else and see The Mastersons.

The Mastersons, Mercury Lounge, 217 East Houston Street between Ludlow and Essex Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit, F Train to Delancey Street or J or M Trains to Essex Street), 11pm, $12
