Tonight: Lower East Side Double Header (Maura Kennedy and Amy Corriea)

August 17, 2010

Maura Kennedy

First up tonight is Maura Kennedy.  She stepped out from The Kennedys earlier this year and put out a wonderful solo record, Parade of Echoes.  Recently, Maura has been playing once a month at Googie’s Lounge, the upstairs semi-acoustic performance space at The Living Room.  At tonight’s show, Maura’s special guest will be Cadence Carrol, singing harmonies.

Next up is Amy Correia.  It’s been a while since I last checked out what Amy was up to. Back then, she wrote a wonderful song, Coney Island USA, about falling asleep on the F train, missing her stop in Carroll Gardens and waking up at Stillwell Avenue.  Lots has happened since that time, including a move out of New York City and a fan-funded new record.  So it will be interesting to hear Amy’s new music in the cozy confines of the original Rockwood Music Hall.

Maura Kennedy, Googie’s Lounge (upstairs at The Living Room), 154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets, (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 8:30pm, No Cover (but $5 donation to the band strongly encouraged)

Amy Correia, The Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 10pm, No Cover (but $5 donation to the band strongly encouraged)

Maura Kennedy CD Release Show at The Living Room

January 19, 2010

For the last 15 years Maura Kennedy, along with her husband Pete Kennedy, has been part of the folk-rock duo The Kennedys.  But tonight at The Living Room, Maura steps into the spotlight alone (well, as alone as you can be with a band playing behind you) to premier her first solo album, Parade of Echoes.

Originally from Syracuse, Maura moved to Austin after college and ended up in Nancy Griffith‘s band, where she and Pete first met.  After awhile, she and Pete left to form The Kennedys.  For the past 15 years The Kennedys have tour constantly playing their brand of jangly folk-rock.

Maura has always been the voice of The Kennedys.   So much so, I think that her guitar playing chops have been overlooked.  But tonight both will be on display.  And as this is the only date (so far) at which Maura will be playing with a full band, this show is a must see in my book.

Maura Kennedy, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street at Stanton Street (F or V Trains to 2nd Avenue, use the First Avenue Exit), 8pm, No Cover, but $5 contribution suggested, Parade of Echoes will be available for sale.
