The Amygdaloids, Joseph LeDoux, Tyler Volk, Daniela Schiller and Amanda Thorp,  are four scientists who play rock and whose songs are based on the work they do at their day jobs.  Rosanne Cash appeared on their last album and they’ve played live with Lenny Kaye, Steve Wynn and The Kennedys.  Tonight’s show is the CD release show for their new EP, All in Our Minds.  No matter what their day job is, these guys really rock.

Tonight: Six Shows With 11 Bands, You Pick ‘Em

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 19, 2011 by Eliot

There are almost too many good choices for music tonight.  You can head out to The Bell House in the industrial area of Gowanus in Brooklyn and hear the psychedelic pop of Robyn Hitchcock and then stick around for the second show with the folk noir of John Wesley Harding and the rock of The Minus 5.

Also in Brooklyn, but this time in Brooklyn Heights, you will find the jangly folk-rock of The Kennedys in the impressive First Unitarian Church.  Brooklyn-based jazz-rocker Debbie Deane opens the show.

Back in Manhattan,on the Lower East Side, you can check out four local musicians (Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club, Matt Cranstoun, Brian Bonz and Nick Africano) playing the early show at The Mercury Lounge.  This is also the CD release show for Matt Cranstoun‘s new one, The Last Drop of Color.

Just a few blocks away from  The Mercury Lounge you can see gritty-voiced Matthew Ryan and his band, The Red Needles, perform songs from the Matthew latest album, I Recall Standing as Though Nothing Could Fall at  The Living Room.

Finally, a few blocks uptown in The East Village you will find the rock and punk band Spanking Charlene playing what the band describes as 5th Annual Spanking Charlene Big Ass Birthday Bash in honor of Charlene’s birthday.  We have been promised horns, strings, backup singers, food, trivia contest, games, laughter, revelry and humiliations galore.  All this happens at The Lakeside Lounge.

Robyn Hitchcock (7pm, $20), John Wesley Harding and The Minus 5 (9pm, $15), The Bell House, 149 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, Brooklyn (Shuttle Bus running in place of the F or G Trains from Jay Street to 4th Avenue or R Train to 9th Street)

Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club, Matt Cranstoun, Brian Bonz, Nick Africano, Mercury Lounge, 217 East Houston Street between Ludlow and Essex Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit, F Train to Delancey Street or J or M Trains to Essex Street), 7pm, $10

The Kennedys and Debbie Deane, First Acoustics at First Unitarian Church, Brooklyn Heights, Pierrepont Street at Monroe Place (4, 5, N or R Trains to Court Street / Borough Hall – note that the 2 and 3 Trains will not be running to Court Street this weekend), 8pm, $30

Matthew Ryan and The Red Needles, Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street at Stanton Street (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 8pm, $10

Spanking Charlene, Lakeside Lounge, 162 Avenue B near 10th Street (any train to 14th Street or the L Train to 1st Avenue, transfer t0 the M14A or M14D bus to 11th Street and walk to Avenue B), 10pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is strongly encouraged)

Tonight: Four Shows, You Choose

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 9, 2011 by Eliot

Here we are at February Residency Wednesday again.  But tonight, we add another show to the mix and get four shows for you to choose from.   One is in the East Village at 8pm, two are on the Lower East Side at 9pm, and one is in Williamsburg at 10pm.  And despite what I said last week, Serena Jean swears that you can get from the Lower East Side to Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg by cab in 10 minutes. Tonight’s selections from which you can mix and match:

Pete Kennedy‘s 2nd Annual Birthday Bash is on tonight from 8-9pm at Banjo Jim’s.  Pete, who, with wife Maura makes up The Kennedys, has been playing some solo shows at Banjo Jim’s recently.  Tonight’s birthday show promises some special guests.

Update: Pete has the flu.  In his place, Maura Kennedy will perform and will be bringing birthday cake.

Milton is both the name of this band and its leader (he’s sitting at the right of the picture to the left).  You’ll find that Milton’s songs are well-crafted and lyrically strong.  Milton hasn’t played New York City all that much in the past few months, and has been working on a new record. Tonight’s show starts at 9pm at  The Living Room, the band’s NYC home.

Aaron Lee Tasjan plays in four bands that I can think of right now, and he will appear as a sideman for a plethora of disparate New York-based musicians.  Tonight Aaron gets a show billed in just his name.  He’s a great songwriter and guitar player, and seems to know and to play with nearly every musician in New York City, so the “and friends” part of Aaron’s show can be practically anyone. No matter what Aaron has up his sleeve, this 9pm show at The Rockwood Music Hall should be well worth your while.

Serena Jean plays a blend of music which is mostly rock with a bit of alt country thrown into the mix.  Originally from Canada, she certainly shows that the saying that no one plays American music better than Canadians is correct in her case.  Tonight’s show at Pete’s Candy Store will feature the return of the Scott Metzger and Serena Jean acoustic duo, Kitty Baby and starts at 10pm.

Recap:

Pete Kennedy, Banjo Jim’s, 700 East 9th Street – the entrance is on Avenue C (A, C, E, F, M, N or R Train to 14th Street or L Train to 1st Avenue, then transfer to M14D bus to 11th Street), 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly encouraged)

Milton, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets, (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Aaron Lee Tasjan and Friends, The Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Serena Jean, Pete’s Candy Store, 709 Lorimer St Williamsburg (L Train to Lorimer Street or G Train to Metropolitan Avenue), 10pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Tonight: Multimedia Science and Music with The Amygdaliods and Special Guests at Don Hill’s

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on September 29, 2010 by Eliot

A tip of the hat to Claude Scales over at Self Absorbed Boomer who brought this show to my attention.  Not only is this a musical performance, there are science lectures, music videos and magic.  Even though I’ve not heard of The Amygdaloids before, the list of musical guests has sold me on this show, which is the release party for the Theory of Mind CD.  Here’s the rundown:

Lectures on brain and mind by Joseph LeDoux and Daniela Shiller (the science behind the songs);
Muisc by The Amygdaloids (Joseph LeDoux, Daniella Schiller, Tyler Volk, Gerald McCollam):
Guests appearances by: Lenny Kaye, Steve Wynn, Ward White , Kathena Bryant and The Kennedys;
Magic by Mark Mitton; and
Music videos by Noah Hutton and Alexis Gambis

The Amygdaloids, Don Hill’s, 511 Greenwich Street at Spring Street (1, A,  C or E Trains to Canal or C or E Trains to Spring Street), doors 7pm /show 7:30pm, $10

Tonight: The Kennedys at City Winery

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , on September 19, 2010 by Eliot

The Kennedys (Pete and Maura) have been playing together since 1994. Usually, when they play live it’s just the two of them.  Even so, with their two guitars, they still get a rather full sound.  But tonight you have the opportunity to see them play with a full band for the first time in New York City since 2000.  Joining Pete and Maura tonight on stage will be drummer Tommy Allen and Ward White on bass and vocals.  I’ve always described the full band Kennedys as sounding like The Byrds but with female lead vocals.

Tonight Pete and Maura will be playing many songs that have been requested via the Net including songs that they have never played live before.  Pete notes:

If we get a good turnout, then maybe it won’t be another ten years until we play our next band show!

The Kennedys, City Winery, 155 Varick Street between Spring and Vandam Streets (C or E Trains to Spring Street, 2 or 3 Trains to Houston or Canal Streets – 1 Train is not running today), 7:30pm doors / 8:00pm show (Jeffrey Gaines will open), $18-25
