News and Notes

May 9, 2012

Is happy hour the new late night?  It used to be that big names would show up to a small club in the wee hours.  But lately, it seems that is happening in the late afternoon/early evening.  Two months ago Norah Jones and her band showed up at The Living Room to play an unannounced show at 6:30.  Yesterday, Glen Hansard played a show announced only to his fans around the same time.  And Glen brought a friend of his to help out: Bono.  Thanks to BillieJo Sheehan for getting the shot above and allowing Now I’ve Heard Everything to use it.

CBGB Festival: There’s a new group of owners of what is left of CBGBs.  They will be holding the CBGB Festival for four days beginning on July 5th.  The festival is modeled after SXSW and CMJ and will be held in a number of clubs throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.  The festival will also include screenings of more than 30 rock-themed films at two downtown cinemas and a series of 24 workshops and conferences and a spirits fest that will incorporate artisan spirits distillers.

Bands announced so far include: The Cro-Mags, Vision of Disorder, Sick of It All, Guided by Voices, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Cloud Nothings, Rocket From The Tombs, The Baseball Project, Craig Finn, Willie Nile,The Dirty Pearls, Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds, D Generation, David Johansen and Ben Taylor.

Venues include Arlene’s Grocery, The Bell House, The Bitter End, The Bowery Electric, The Box, Cafe Wha?, Th Canal Room, Summer Stage, City Winery, The Delancey, Fontana’s, The Gramercy Theater, Hank’s Saloon, The Highline Ballroom, Hill Country, Joe’s Pub, The Knitting Factory, Le Poisson Rouge, Lit Lounge, Littlefield, The Living Room, Local 269, Otto’s Shruken Head, Pianos, Sullivan Hall, Tammany Hall, Trash Bar and Webster Hall.

Badges for the music performances portion of CBGB Festival are now on sale for $69 through the end of May.  The price will go up June 1 to $79 and to $89 on July 5.  There is also a badge for film and a combined music and film badge.

Advance Planning: April 2012 Music Calendar Update (Added 4/5)

April 5, 2012

If you went to see music at The Rockwood Music Hall, The Mercury Lounge , The Living Room or The Bowery Electric, chances are that you would eventually run into Lucinda Gallagher.  She was a  dark haired, bright eyed and generous woman with an encyclopedic knowledge of local bands.  Stick around a little more and you would learn that Lucinda was a single mom with two kids,  each kid having his or her own musical taste, which you would learn about too.

Lucinda died suddenly late last December.  Friends from the downtown music scene stepped into to give those kids a home.  Later this months, some of Lucinda’s favorite bands will be playing at The Bowery Electric to help raise funds for Lucinda’s kids.  At this writing, Marah, Jesse Malin, Aaron Lee Tasjan and Petter Ericson Stakee (of Alberta Cross) have been announced for that show, and some more musicians will be added.  Tickets for this show have been moving briskly, and you can get yours here.

I’ve also added a show this Friday at Bar 4 honoring Neil Young:

Apr. 6 – The Local Correspondents Live Tribute to Neil Young with Alana Amram, Amal Bouhabib, Amy Sheehan, Bucky Hayes, Chris Q Murphy, Daniel Wayne, Dave Doobinin, Erik Emmanuelson & Robin Bacior, EW Harris, Gabe Berezin, Gordon Hartin, Greg Di Gesu, James Preston, Jeff Konigsberg, Jeff Malinowski, Kamara Thomas, Maddy Wyatt, Matt Whyte, Miss Tess, Paul Basile, Serena Southam, Thomas Bryan Eaton and more – Bar 4 – 8pm

Apr. 29 – Benefit for Lucinda’s Kids featuring Marah, Jesse Malin, Aaron Lee Tasjan , Petter Ericson Stakee (of Alberta Cross) and more – The Bowery Electric – 6pm

Photo Recap: Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3 at The Bowery Electric

February 25, 2012

For nearly 90 minutes last night, Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3 (Jason Victor on guitar, Dave DeCastro on bass and Linda Pitmon on drums) delivered the no frills straight ahead rock ‘n’ roll that has been their trademark for all of the 21st Century.  The packed house at The Bowery Electric got a show that featured some songs that the band hasn’t played for a while (see the set list at the end of this post).  And when Jason broke a string about a third of the way in of That’s What You Always Say, he changed it during the song, which Steve stretched out a bit to make sure that Jason was ready for the solo.  Of course, Jason was and he blistered it, as always.

Here are some photos from the show:

Tonight: Emily Zuzik at The Rockwood Music Hall and Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3 at The Bowery Electric

February 24, 2012

Here are two shows from Now I’ve Heard Everything favorites.  First up is the only 2012 NYC show of the Emily Zuzik Band.  They’ll play songs from their rocking recent album, The Wild Joys of Living (you can read my review of it here) plus other songs from Emily’s repertoire and perhaps even a cover or two.  Emily has been on quite a roll lately; in addition to releasing TWJOL, she wrote and sang the song The Low Hum on the latest Moby album, Destroyed, and was featured on the cover of The Pretenders’ Message of Love, the theme song of the NBC summer series Love Bites.  Why is this the only NYC show this year for Emily?  She now lives in LA and she’s soon to start a new side project: a family.

When Emily’ set is finished, walk west on Houston Street to The Bowery and then north a few blocks to The Bowery Electric to see Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3. That’s Steve along with guitarist Jason Victor, bassist Dave DeCastro and drummer Linda Pitmon in their spiffy new publicity shot to the right. Here’s what I said about this band when I bestowed on Steve the Now I’ve Heard Everything Artist of the Decade Award:

Steve and The Miracle Three are, in my opinion, the best live rock band in America (and probably the world).  They have a great catalog of songs stretching from the 21st century all the way back to Steve’s days with The Dream Syndicate in the 1980s.  They are not afraid of, and understand how to use the power of loudness.  And Steve, Jason, Dave and Linda are excellent musicians who enjoy playing with and off each other.

Emily Zuzik, Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3, The Bowery Electric, 327 Bowery between 2nd and 3rd Streets (6 Train to Bleecker Street or Astor Place, F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 2nd Avenue exit), doors 7:30pm / Kraig Johnson opens at 8:30, Steve & M3 at 9:30, $12
