Tonight: The Amygdaloids at The Bowery Electric

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 27, 2012 by Eliot

The Amygdaloids, Joseph LeDoux, Tyler Volk, Daniela Schiller and Amanda Thorp,  are four scientists who play rock and whose songs are based on the work they do at their day jobs.  Rosanne Cash appeared on their last album and they’ve played live with Lenny Kaye, Steve Wynn and The Kennedys.  Tonight’s show is the CD release show for their new EP, All in Our Minds.  No matter what their day job is, these guys really rock.

The AmygdaloidsThe Bowery Electric, 327 Bowery between 2nd and 3rd Streets (6 Train to Bleeker Street or Astor Place, F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 2nd Avenue exit), 7pm, $7

Tonight: Five Shows, But You’ll Only Be Able to See Two of Them

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 6, 2012 by Eliot

It’s one of those nights where there are too many good bands playing opposite each other.  Given the times that they play and including traveling time, you can probably only see two of the five shows listed below.  So you’ll have to choose between the rock and punk of Spanking Charlene, the intelligent pop and very funny between song remarks of Jim Boggia, the Americana and folk rock with a touch of the Irish from The Buddies (who are based in Chicago), the amalgam of  rock, r&b, latin rhythms, 40s and 50s pop from Julia Haltigan and her large band, or the soul/rock/funk onslaught from the nine piece Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds.  All the details you need are below.

Spanking Charlene, Lakeside Lounge, 162 Avenue B near 10th Street (any train to 14th Street or the L Train to 1st Avenue, transfer t0 the M14A or M14D bus to 11th Street and walk to Avenue B), 7pm, No Cover.

Jim Boggia (8pm),  Julia Haltigan (9pm), Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

The Buddies, The Bowery Electric, 327 Bowery between 2nd and 3rd Streets (6 Train to Bleeker Street or Astor Place, F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 2nd Avenue exit), 8:30pm

Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Rockwood Stage 2 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9:30pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Review: Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3 at The Bowery Electric

Posted in Live NYC, Reviews with tags , , , , , on December 4, 2011 by Eliot

It wasn’t clear that I was going to be able to get to The Bowery Electric on Friday night to see the final 2011 appearance of Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3.  I had been laid low by a rather nasty bug for most of the week.  But by Friday night, I had recovered enough to hop on the F train and make the short journey to the Lower East Side.

I decided that since I still wasn’t feeling 100%, instead of getting to the front of the stage and taking pictures during the show, I would just park myself by the railing, about 25 feet back.  This vantage point had an unexpected advantage.  Since it was just behind the sound man and his console, the sound was particularly good.

Around 9:40, Steve, Jason Victor (guitar), Dave DeCastro (bass) and Linda Pitmon (drums) took the stage.  On a fashion note, Linda wore a black and gold shimmery metallic top which was quite striking (you can see it in the photo above).  The rest of the band wore their standard Miracle 3 garb.

I suppose that the plan for kicking off some of the rust that might have accumulated over the past five months or so when the band had not played together was to play hard, loud and passionately.  That’s what The Miracle 3 did: starting with Halloween and then segueing immediately into Bruises.  There was a false start to Colored Lights (Steve started out in the wrong key) but that was soon corrected and it was smooth sailing and hard rocking from then on.

I’ve included the full set list at the end of this post.  One thing that I found interesting is that all but three songs were drawn from three albums: Northern Aggression, …tick…tick…tick and The Days of Wine and Roses.

During the set, Steve took the whammy bar off his Jazzmaster and gave it to Jason to use during the next song, which Jason did.  After the song was over, he returned that piece of hardware to Steve.  What happened to the whammy bar on Jason’s guitar (the same one he has been using for years) wasn’t explained.

And speaking of Jason’s guitar, it stood out in the mix this time.  I really enjoyed being to able to hear it that cleanly.

I was also surprised, and delighted, that Steve finally dusted off The Way You Punish Me and played it during the encore.  I’ve always liked that song, but this is the first time I can recall seeing it live.

This show ran about 90 minutes and included 17 songs.  The set list is below.

Halloween
Bruises
Colored Lights
Consider The Source
No One Ever Drowns
Cindy, It Was Always You
No Tomorrow
Tell Me When It’s Over
Resolution
Death Valley Rain
The Deep End
That’s What You Always Say
Amphetamine

Encore
When You Smile
The Way You Punish Me
Wild Mercury
The Days Of Wine And Roses

Tonight: Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3 at The Bowery Electric

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , on December 2, 2011 by Eliot

Tonight the band I suggest, make that urge, you to see is Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3.  That’s Steve along with guitarist Jason Victor, bassist Dave DeCastro and drummer Linda Pitmon in their spiffy new publicity shot above..  They play The Bowery Electric tonight and tickets are 10 bucks.  You won’t see a better live show anywhere else this evening, or the rest of this year for that matter. Here’s what I said about this band when I bestowed on Steve the Now I’ve Heard Everything Artist of the Decade Award:

Steve and The Miracle Three are, in my opinion, the best live rock band in America (and probably the world).  They have a great catalog of songs stretching from the 21st century all the way back to Steve’s days with The Dream Syndicate in the 1980s.  They are not afraid of, and understand how to use the power of loudness.  And Steve, Jason, Dave and Linda are excellent musicians who enjoy playing with and off each other.

Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3, 327 Bowery between 2nd and 3rd Streets (6 Train to Bleeker Street or Astor Place, F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 2nd Avenue exit), doors 8pm / Suzanne Real opens at 8:30, Steve & M3 at 9:30, $10
