Rodney Crowell is a singer, songwriter and producer. In the past he’s played with Emmylou Harris and produced Rosanne Cash but he’s been performing on his own for quite a while now. Although originally cast as a country singer, Rodney’s songs are more alt country, folk and rock. Then there was the title track from his album Fate’s Right Hand, which can be accurately described as alt country hip-hop. If you listen to Rodney for any length of time, you’ll see that he really can’t be pigeonholed as anything except literate and intelligent.
Rodney recently toured with a trio composed of himself and two other excellent musicians: Nashville-based guitarist Will Kimbrough and multi-instrumentalist (including fiddle and guitar) Jenny Scheinman, who is based in Brooklyn. There’s a live album coming from that tour, and Rodney is offering three free tracks from that album if you sign up for his mailing list here.
Also coming from Rodney shortly is a book about his childhood, Chinaberry Sidewalks and a one-man show in which he’ll be playing guitar, singing, and re-living the stories in the book. That show will hit New York City in March, 2011.

Sunday is the Brooklyn Book Festival and this year the BBF has five music related programs. I’ve copied the descriptions of them from the BBF’s website, which you should look at for full details and a map. But if you are interested in just the music programs, which this year includes a discussion with Rosanne Cash (and probably a song or two performed as a duo with John Leventhal), just print out the information below.
ALL EVENTS FREE
Programs taking place in the Brooklyn Borough Hall Courtroom and St. Francis College Auditorium are ticketed.
Free tickets will be distributed one hour before the start of the program from the Brooklyn Book Festival Information Booths
10AM: It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll (But I Like It). Musically inspired readings by three chart-topping American fiction writers: Steve Almond (Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life), Jennifer Egan (A Visit from the Goon Squad), and Colson Whitehead (Sag Harbor). Followed by Q&A.
ST. FRANCIS AUDITORIUM
Noon: Pop Life: Music, Memory, and America’s Coming of Age. Rob Sheffield (Talking to Girls About Duran Duran), Joshua Clover (1989), and Ta-Nehisi Coates (The Beautiful Struggle) discuss the ways that memory and personal and political meaning inhabit the most ephemeral music and popular culture. Moderated by Julie Burstein, creator of public radio’s Studio 360 and the author of the forthcoming Spark: How Creativity Works.
ST. FRANCIS MARONEY SCREENING ROOM
1pm: COMPOSED: In Conversation with Rosanne Cash. Celebrated music journalist Jancee Dunn (Why Is My Mother Getting a Tattoo?) talks to the first daughter of country music about her new memoir, life with her famous father, and coming into her own as an artist.
MAINSTAGE
OR
The Problem with Music. Does music have the same role in our lives it once did, or has it become mere background noise in our more-now-again age of oversaturation? Do rock, punk, and hip-hop still provide a voice and a sense of community to the alienated and disaffected? And what of technology’s role in these changes? Four music writers discuss the state of the art. With Sara Marcus (Girls to the Front), Greg Milner (Perfecting Sound Forever), Elijah Wald (How the Beatles Destroyed Rock ’n’ Roll), and Thomas Chatterton Williams (Losing My Cool).
ST. FRANCIS MARONEY SCREENING ROOM
2pm: Culture vs. Cash. Explore the breach between the role of the musician as artist and the role of the record companies as a business. Oftentimes music rises up out of subcultures that are about much more than profits, but ultimately the industry is a business that must support itself financially. Dan Charnas (The Big Payback), Will Hermes (The Big Bang), Kristin Hersh (Rat Girl), and moderator Greg Tate (James Brown’s Body and the Revolution of the Mind) look at the conflicting interests of artists and executives.

Paste Magazine, RIP: This week, Paste Magazine, the music magazine which reviewed a pretty broad spectrum of music, which included the music followed by Now I’ve Heard Everything, stopped publishing its printed edition. According to a post on pastemagazine.com, Paste, “is focusing on its digital assets, including PasteMagazine.com.” Unfortunately, this is not really a surprise. It was just a year ago when Paste requested contributions from its readers so that it could continue publishing, which it did. However, what will remain of Paste in the future remains to be seen.
Brooklyn Book Festival: Coming up on Sunday, September 12 is the annual Brooklyn Book Festival. This year the BBF includes five panels about music, including an interview with Rosanne Cash about her recently published memoir, Composed, at 1pm. All events are free, but some require tickets which are distributed an hour prior to the event. Tickets are not required for Rosanne’s interview.
Rosanne on Twitter: Speaking of Rosanne Cash, she is well worth following on Twitter. Rosanne’s tweets about what she is doing, her husband, John Leventhal (“Mr.L”) and her 11 year-old son, Jakob, (“The Little Mobster”). She is always interesting, usually very funny and occasionally even poetic (she recently had a run of haikus). Her most recent tweet:
Nice day in Switzerland. Lot of vintage rockers in hotel: Canned Heat, Steppenwolf, Joan Jett. I play tonight. Want to do ‘Born to Be Wild’.
Mark Your Calendar: Even though it’s only early September, two shows coming later this fall have already caught my eye: Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3 will be playing The Living Room on October 8, and Chuck Prophet and The Mission Express will be playing The Bowery Electric on November 11. Each of these shows has the potential of being the highlight of the fall season.

Next Up I: Rosanne Cash is currently on tour to promote her just issued book, Composed. But she’s already lined up her next music project. She described it this way: “I think I’m going to do is this trio project with Joe Henry and Billy Bragg. We’re supposed to get together in November to start this. We’re all three starting writing songs for that, and I’m really excited about doing that.”
Next Up II: Ted Leo has a very long essay on his website titled “Majorly Massive Career Trajectory News! You Might Say, ‘Paradigm Shift,’ Even!!” which announces that he’s worked on a musical film project of some sort which will be announced tomorrow. Check Ted’s website for a link to a clip or perhaps more then.
Paste Magazine posts some interesting music and film related lists from time to time. Recently they posted a list (complete with videos!) of the 50 Best Fictional Bands. Although Spinal Tap is not #1 (they wuz robbed as the saying goes) it’s quite amusing, and of course there are video clips to go with most of those fictional bands. Click here for that list.

Rosanne Cash played Governors Island on July 4th. Getting to Governors Island required only a short, free ferry ride from Brooklyn Bridge Park at the foot of Atlantic Avenue (in Brooklyn), but there was a long line to get onto the boat. Once on the island, the walk to the concert site took less than 10 minutes.
Rosanne played for 90 minutes with a full band. She noted that with the exception of her and John Leventhal (her husband) all the members of the band were from Brooklyn. Most of the show was drawn from Rosanne’s last album, The List, which was made up of 12 songs from the list of 100 must know country songs that Rosanne’s father, Johnny Cash, had drawn up and given her when she was 18. Also included were a few songs from her previous album, Black Cadillac, including a wonderful straight ahead rock version of Dreams Are Not My Home (with John Leventhal playing a blistering lead guitar), a great rendition of Bobbi Gentry‘s Ode to Billy Joe, Rosanne’s own classic Seven Year Ache and a few others.

Staying in town this weekend? There’s lots of good music around. Here are my suggestions: tonight (Friday), Alejandro Escovedo and Willie Nile at City Winery or Spottiswoode and His Enemies at 92Y Tribeca; Sunday (the 4th!) Rosanne Cash at Governors Island during the afternoon and The Demolition String Band at Banjo Jim’s at night. Check out the NIHE July Calendar for more information.

Kristin Diable is a singer-songwriter from Louisiana, who lived in New York City for a few years. She moved back to Louisiana about a year ago but she certainly remains high on the list of talented musicians waiting to be discovered by a larger audience. Kristin, like many musicians these days, is looking to crowd source the funding for her next album, which she’s going to write over the next 10 weeks. You can read more about it here.
Remember the profile on subway singer Alana Sveta? I’ve heard from her that she’s changed her name to Alana Stewart.

NIHE favorite Milton will be going into the studio shortly to record the follow up to the band’s excellent 2008 album, Grand Hotel. No release date as of this writing.
NIHE is taking the weekend off and will be back bright and early on the morning of Tuesday, July 6th.

Last night’s benefit for Nashville musicians at Hill Country was both a success financially (it raised $10,000) and artistically. Props go to Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians which organized the show and, of course to all who played in it. The lighting of the stage at Hill Country made taking pictures tricky, but here are shots of every act that played.

Jon Leventhal and Rosanne Cash

Eric Weissberg, Footch Fischetti, Roger Mason and Bill Keith
