The Amygdaloids, Joseph LeDoux, Tyler Volk, Daniela Schiller and Amanda Thorp,  are four scientists who play rock and whose songs are based on the work they do at their day jobs.  Rosanne Cash appeared on their last album and they’ve played live with Lenny Kaye, Steve Wynn and The Kennedys.  Tonight’s show is the CD release show for their new EP, All in Our Minds.  No matter what their day job is, these guys really rock.

Tonight: The Songs of Tom Waits at The Living Room

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 18, 2011 by Eliot

A few years ago, The Living Room held a series of shows honoring the songwriting talents of The Band, Fleetwood Mac and David Bowie.  They were always fun, brought out a great cross section of local musicians (including a big name or two who showed up unannounced) and left you understanding what good songwriters the particular night’s honoree was.  The guide behind those shows was Tim Luntzel.  But then Tim got busy with other things (including touring with Rosanne Cash) and those shows ceased.

Well, tonight that series continues, again under the guiding hand of Tim.  This time we have a Tribute to Tom Waits featuring Carol Lipnik, Charlie Burnham, Chris Cubeta, Dayna Kurtz, Dred Scott, Greg Tannen, Harper Blynn, Jason Crosby, Jim Boggia, Jim Keller, Jon Wiley, Mamie Minch,  Marilyn Carino, Nick Casey, Noam Weinstein, Sam Bisbee, Sasha Dobson and more and with house band Tim Luntzel, Steve Elliot, Dred Scott, Andrew Borger and Rob DiPietro.  It’s set to run from 9pm to midnight, but you can come for just a part of the show if that’s all you have time for.

A Tribute to Tom Waits, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm-Midnight,  $12 (if you order your ticket online you get $1 off your drinks)

Tonight: New York on My Mind Tribute to The Bottom Line at Rockefeller Park

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 22, 2011 by Eliot

For nearly 30 years starting in 1974, The Bottom Line at West 4th Street and Mercer Street was rock central in New York City.  There were other venues, sure, but it seemed that every act that was or was going to be important played there.  Bruce Springsteen‘s week of shows there in 1975 broke him out of the pack.  The place was an institution which came to an end in early 2004 as the result of a dispute with its landlord, New York University (the space occupied by The Bottom Line is now NYU classroom space).

But tonight’s show at Rockefeller Park, The Bottom Line Presents New York on My Mind is made up of a number of performers who graced The Bottom Line’s stage at one time or another and includes: GrooveBarbers, Rosanne Cash, Marshall Crenshaw, Garland Jeffreys, Willie Nile, NRBQ, Martin Rivas, Suzzy and Lucy Wainwright Roche, Vin Scelsa, Loudon Wainwright III, Dar Williams, Catherine Russell featuring music director John Leventhal with Mojo Mancini and hosted by Meg Griffin.   Additional musicians may perform as well.

The Bottom Line Presents New York on My Mind, Rockefeller Park, the north end of Battery Park City, at the corner of River Terrace and Warren Street (A, C, E 1, 2 or 3 Trains to Chambers Street), 7pm, Free. Note: In case of rain, the show may be moved into nearby Stuyvesant High School which has a much smaller capacity; check the River to River website or Twitter

Update: I’ve now heard from two reliable sources that the rain site for this show is The World Financial Center Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street.

Update: It’s official.  The show has been moved to The World Financial Center Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street.  The start time remains 7pm.

Tonight: Freedom Rider’s Project or JD Souther and Jill Andrews or Charlie Faye or Lelia Broussard

Every few months a day arrives with a number of top notch shows all running opposite each other.  Well, today is one of those days.  There are four excellent shows and depending on how you choose, you can only see one or two of them.  Here’s the run down:

At 7pm over in Prospect Park, Celebrate Brooklyn has Hal Willner’s Freedom Riders Project featuring  Geri Allen, Art Baron, Steve Bernstein, Steve Cardenas, James Carter, Rosanne Cash, Carla Cook, Helga Davis, Curtis Fowlkes, Brad Jones, Briggan Krauss, Eric Mingus, JD Parran, Toshi Reagon, Lou Reed, Todd Rundgren, Tao Seeger, James Staten, Jason Walker, Kenny Wollesen and probably others as well.  Subtitled The Music of The Civil Rights Movement, expect one or possibly two songs per performer.

Over in Manhattan Joe’s Pub has a terrific double bill starting at the same time as the previous show.  JD Souther is known as a singer-songwriter whose songs fueled The Eagles and Linda Ronstadt back in the 70s.   Jill Andrews is a wonderful singer-songwriter who was formerly in The everybodyfields (that’s how they wrote it, with a lower case e) and is now out on her own and touring behind her new album, The Mirror.

At 8 at The Living Room, Charlie Faye brings her wonderful voice and strong songwriting to New York from Austin.  She has a new record coming out later this summer which consists of songs she wrote in various cities when she was on tour in 2010.

Finally at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 at 9:30pm, Lelia Broussard will return to New York from her performance at Bonnaroo, part of the contest being run by Rolling Stone to see who gets on the cover of their forthcoming August 18th edition.

What you see tonight is a tough decision, but whatever you choose, you choice will be an excellent one.

To recap:

Hal Willner’s Freedom Riders Project, Celebrate Brooklyn, Prospect Park Bandshell, entrances on Prospect Park West and 9th and 11th Streets (F or G Trains to 7th Avenue, use the 8th Avenue exit), gates 6pm /show 7pm, Free (but $3 contribution at the gate is requested)

JD Souther and Jill Andrews, Joe’s Pub, 425 Lafayette Street between Astor Place and E. 4th Street (R Train to 8th Street, 6 Train to Astor Place), 7pm, $20

Charlie FayeThe Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly encouraged)

Lelia Broussard, The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9:30pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Photo Recap: Blackie and The Rodeo Kings at The Living Room

Posted in Live NYC, Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 15, 2011 by Eliot

There were many good shows on Tuesday night, but for my money, the place to be was The Living Room.  There Canada’s Blackie and The Rodeo Kings played a crisp, loud and commanding one hour set in celebration of the release of their newest record, Kings and Queens.  Blackie is made up of three singer/guitarists, Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson, plus bassist John Dymond and drummer Gary Craig.

The new album consists of 14 songs, each sung with a different woman artist (the list includes: Rosanne Cash, Exene Cervenka, Holy Cole, Emmylou Harris, Amy Helm, Janiva Magness, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Sam Phillips, Serena Ryder, Pam Tillis, Sara Watkins, Lucinda Williams, Cassandra Wilson and Patti Scialfa).  From that group, joining Blackie on I’m Still Lovin’ You and three other numbers was Amy Helm.

There was a pretty full and enthusiastic house tonight.  It was clear that if there would have been more time, the audience would have wanted more from Blackie and The Rodeo Kings.  Here are some photos of the show.

Tonight: Blackie and The Rodeo Kings at The Living Room (With Video)

I doubt you’ve heard of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings before. A real roots rock outfit made up of Canadians Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson, BARK (you gotta love that acronym) has been around for 15 years now.  I first found the band through Kathleen Edwards, who is only one of a number of  musicians who are fans of this band.

About three years ago, they guys in BARK thought about recording an album with guest women musicians.  That new album is titled Kings and Queens and this show is the official record release show (the CD hits stores and other outlets today).  The guest artists include Rosanne Cash, Exene Cervenka, Holy Cole, Emmylou Harris, Amy Helm, Janiva Magness, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Sam Phillips, Serena Ryder, Pam Tillis, Sara Watkins, Lucinda Williams, Cassandra Wilson and Patti Scialfa.  While there is no word whether any of those guests will appear tonight, I do see that one lives only a short cab ride away from The Living Room, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

The video above of Stoned, an older song from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, should give you an idea of what Blackie can sound like.

Tonight: The Amygdaloids at Banjo Jim’s

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , on May 13, 2011 by Eliot

The Amygdaloids are four scientists who play rock and whose songs are based on the work they do at their day jobs.  Rosanne Cash appeared on their last album and they’ve recently played live with Lenny Kaye, Steve Wynn and The Kennedys.  Tonight, in honor of it being Friday the 13th, they’ll be doing some  fear songs to kick the evening off.  They’ve also promised to premiere  some new tunes as well.

The Amygdaloids, Banjo Jim’s, 700 East 9th Street – the entrance is on Avenue C (A, C, E, F, M, N or R Train to 14th Street or L Train to 1st Avenue, then transfer to M14D bus to 11th Street), 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly encouraged)

Freebie: Three Live Tracks from Rodney Crowell

Posted in Freebies with tags , , , , , , on November 14, 2010 by Eliot

Rodney Crowell is a singer, songwriter and producer.  In the past he’s played with Emmylou Harris and produced Rosanne Cash but he’s been performing on his own for quite a while now.  Although originally cast as a country singer, Rodney’s songs are more alt country, folk and rock. Then there was the title track from his album Fate’s Right Hand, which can be accurately described as alt country hip-hop.  If you listen to Rodney for any length of time, you’ll see that he really can’t be pigeonholed as anything except literate and intelligent.

Rodney recently toured with a trio composed of himself and two other excellent musicians: Nashville-based guitarist Will Kimbrough and multi-instrumentalist (including fiddle and guitar) Jenny Scheinman, who is based in Brooklyn.  There’s a live album coming from that tour, and Rodney is offering three free tracks from that album if you sign up for his mailing list here.

Also coming from Rodney shortly is a book about his childhood, Chinaberry  Sidewalks and a one-man show in which he’ll be playing guitar, singing, and re-living the stories in the book.  That show will hit New York City in March, 2011.
