Everyone Is Playing Today: A Guide

September 26, 2010

If you missed the guide I posted earlier this week to today’s Atlantic Antic, Dumbo Arts Festival, Tinderbox Music Festival and great string of shows at The Rockwood Music Hall tonight, here it is once again:

With two street fairs, a benefit and some inspired booking by The Rockwood Music Hall, it seems like every band in the world is playing in Brooklyn or Manhattan today.  Here’s the rundown:

The Atlantic Antic is a street fair that runs on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn and is Brooklyn’s largest. This is the 36th annual Atlantic Antic and it features ten live entertainment stages.  I recommend seeing The Demolition String Band, who will be appearing  at the stage in front of Hank’s, at the corner of Atlantic and 3rd Avenue.  The full schedule is here.

The Atlantic Antic, Atlantic Avenue between Hicks Street and 4th Avenue (2, 3, 4, 5 Trains to Nevins St. or Atlantic Avenue or Borough Hall, R Train to Borough Hall or Lawrence St. or Pacific St., F Train to Bergen Street or Jay Street, B or Q Trains to Atlantic Avenue,  N or D Trains to Pacific Street or A, C or G Trains to Hoyt-Schemerhorn or Jay Street) 10am-6pm, Free

The Dumbo Arts Festival takes place through a large area in DUMBO, the area in Brooklyn between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday and has multiple stages located throughout DUMBO.  Familiar names playing on Sunday include Tom Verlaine, Flutterbox and Julia Joseph, vocalist with Milton, who is performing a set of her own material.  You can get a map here (the festival is quite spread out) and find the music schedule here.

The Dumbo Arts Festival, DUMBO (F Train to  Jay Street, A or C Trains  to High Street or 2 or 3 Trains to Clark Street), Noon- 7pm, Free

Moving indoors, The first Tinderbox Music Festival will be taking place at Southpaw in Park Slope starting around 3pm.  Tinderbox aims to create more space for women musicians by bringing together and promoting established and emerging female artists and will donate 100% of net proceeds to organizations involved in giving rise to the next generation of women’s voices such as Girls Write Now and The Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls.  There are 19 acts in all performing on two stages and NIHE fave Misty Boyce will be among the performers.  Check the Tinderbox website here for a complete list of performers and show times.

The Tinderbox Music Festival, Southpaw, 125 Fifth Avenue between St. Johns and Sterling Places (2 or 3 Trains to Bergan Street), doors 3pm / show 3:30pm $17 /$20 day of show

If you have had enough of the great outdoors, or even enough of Brooklyn, then The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 lives up to its nickname, The Rockwood Colosseum, by presenting three really good shows in a row.

First up at 7pm is Jon Graboff’s Pedal Steel Guitar World of Discovery w/ Ethan Eubanks, Jeff Hill & Special Guest Dave Schramm.  Following them up at 8pm is Poundcake, a band consisting of Teddy Thompson, Ethan Eubanks and Jeff Hill, who perform covers of late 50s-early 60s rock and rockabilly tunes.  Finally, at 9pm Sasha Dobson and her band will play.

Jon Graboff, Poundcake and Sasha Dobson, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 7-10pm, No Cover (but $5 contribution for each band strongly encouraged)

Want more?  Then move next door to the original Rockwood Music Hall and catch Kristin Diable (who played a wonderful set at The Living Room on Wednesday) play one last show in New York, at midnight,  before she returns to New Orleans.

Everyone Is Playing Sunday: A Guide

Tonight: Second Dan at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

September 15, 2010

Second Dan at Rockwood Stage 2

Second Dan been called Oasis without the posturing.  They are a New York City based band, although the Melbourne accent of  lead singer, Dan Rosen, might lead you to conclude otherwise.  Their lead guitarist, Adam Lerner,  is also a photographer.  As for their music, you can call them rock and power pop.

But if you don’t get yourself down to The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 tonight, you’ll have to wait until 2011 to see Second Dan.  And that would be a shame, because this band is tuneful, loud and fun.

Second Dan, Rockwood Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 8:30pm, No Cover (but $5 donation for the band highly recommended)

Tonight: You Have Choices! James Maddock at Rockwood Stage 2 or The Golden Palominos at The Living Room

September 11, 2010

Tonight two excellent acts are playing at exactly the same time three blocks apart.  When confronted with a choice like this, just remember that whatever choice you make will be a good one.

Over at The Rockwood Music Hal Stage 2, you’ll find James Maddock playing his monthly full band show.  James is certainly a favorite around here.  He had a wonderful album out last year, Sunrise on Avenue C, and he is even better live.  In fact, last month James recorded a live album (due out mid-October) right here at  The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 with his band, Oli Rockberger (piano), John Shannon (guitar), Drew Mortali (bass), Aaron Comess (drums) and Leslie Mendelson (vocals and tambourine).  James’ shows are not only excellent musically, they are just plain fun.  This is a ticketed show ($10 advance $12 at the door) which Freddie Stevenson will open.

Or see The Golden Palominos at The Living Room.  This show was announced by The Living Room on Twitter only last night.  This lineup, Anton Fier, Syd Straw, Jody Harris, Robert Kidney, Amanda Kramer, Jim Campilongo, Tony Maimone and Tony Scherr is the updated version of the 1985-87 edition of this band which only came back together in May of this year for two performances (they also performed at City Winery last night).  What you’ll get from this band is excellent vocals from Syd Straw, top notch guitar playing all around and even a few songs in the electric blues vein led by Robert Kidney.  The Golden Palominos is also a band that other musicians love and the last time I saw them play there were a whole bunch of NIHE’s favorites in the audience.

Here’s the recap:

James MaddockThe Rockwood Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Street (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), Doors 7pm, Freddie Stevenson opens at 8pm.  Tickets $10 advance /$12 at the door

The Golden Palominos, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street at Stanton Street (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm (get there early as there will be a line), $15

Photo Recap: Monday Night at The Rockwood with Nick Africano, Misty Boyce and Chris Cubeta

Freebie: Giveaway for Two Tickets to Sam and Ruby at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2

September 8, 2010

Now I’ve Heard Everything is very happy to offer you yet another ticket giveaway.  This time The Rockwood Music Hall is offering a lucky reader two tickets to the September 16th performance of Sam and Ruby, with opener Dan Dyer.

I had not heard of Sam and Ruby before The Rockwood brought them to my attention.  They have a fascinating back story as NPR noted:

Sam Brooker and Ruby Amanfu are not the likeliest of musical pairings. He’s from Wisconsin, and is into guitar. She hails from Ghana, was raised in Nashville and has roots planted firmly in the church. But together, they have discovered the power of collaboration.

You can listen to a live performance of Sam and Ruby on NPR here.  I’ll admit that they are more folk and acoustic than I usually discuss here, but if you like them, this is a great chance to score a couple of tickets and to see Sam and Ruby up close.  To enter the giveaway, all you need do is to leave a comment to this post.  I’ll put all the names in a hat and pick a winner on the moorning of September 14th.  Read the complete rules and enter the giveaway after the jump. Tonight: End the Holiday Weekend With Misty Boyce (and Maybe Come Early and Stay Late)

September 6, 2010

The long holiday weekend isn’t quite over.  If you’d like it to last just a little longer, head over to The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 tonight and see singer-songwriter Misty Boyce.  I’ve seen Misty  play as a solo and with a band. But whatever configuration she plays with, what you get is great songwriting, spirited playing and an energetic crowd and tonight, which is likely a full band show, should be no exception.  Misty has great stage presence, writes excellent songs, plays loud and strong and sings like that too.  As an added bonus, Misty will be giving away a download card for “a new old song we just recorded, called Blue Like Sea.”

If you come to The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 at 7:30pm, you’ll get to see a set by Nick Africano, who frequently joins Misty on several songs during her set.  And right after Misty’s set, at 9:30pm, you can see Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club.  Misty has joined them on stage from time to time as well.

Misty Boyce, The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit) 8:30pm, No Cover (but $5 donation for the band strongly encouraged)

Photo Recap: The Damnwells at Rockwood Stage 2

September 3, 2010

The Damnwells played two sold out shows at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 on Thursday night.  I was at the early show.  The opening act was Alex and Angela from The Damnwells and guest Ari Hest playing a few numbers acoustically.

After a short intermission all of The Damnwells came on stage and played the songs on their just completed album (which may or may not be titled No One Listens to The Band Anymore) in the order in which they are sequenced on the record.  Alex said that this was the first time that these songs have been played by the band in public.  The show ended with two songs from previous albums.
