Tonight: Dayna Kurtz at The Living Room

October 1, 2013

Dayna Kurtz‘s Secret Canon, Vol. 1 was one of Now I’ve Heard Everything’s Best Albums of 2012 and Do I Love You from that record was Now I’ve Heard Everything’s Best Song of 2012. That record consists of mid 20th century r&b, jazz and/or blues songs which have not been previously covered or covered only once. Both live and on record, Dayna is able to infuse this material with tremendous verve and passion.

Dayna has continued down that same road with her latest album, Secret Cannon, Vol. 2.  You can see a video of Dayna singing Reconsider Me, a song from that album, by clicking here.

Dayna used to be based here, but moved down to New Orleans earlier this year.  So take this opportunity to catch Dayna tonight, her last show ever at The Living Room in its current location.   Dayna will be playing will a Peter Vitalone on piano.

Dayna Kurtz, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 7pm, $15

Photo Recap: Dayna Kurtz at Joe’s Pub and The Rodeo Bar

April 11, 2012

Here are some photos from Dayna Kurtz‘s two record release shows shows yesterday.  The first was at Joe’s Pub for Secret Canon, Vol. 1, and the other was at The Rodeo Bar for American Standard.  Dayna had a different band at each show, and she played all of both albums and then some.  The shows were fun and the bus that Dayna hired to take those attending both shows from Joe’s Pub to the Rodeo Bar was wild.  It was a party bus complete was butler and a bar!

Tonight: Dayna Kurtz at Joe’s Pub and The Rodeo Bar

April 10, 2012

Today, Dayna Kurtz released two records: Secret Canon, Vol. 1, and American Standard.  Tonight, she’ll do something rather unique: she’ll play a record release show for each record, but with two different bands and at two different clubs.  And Dayna is even running a bus between those clubs for many of those who are attending both shows!

The first show will be at Joe’s Pub at 7pm.  This will be the Secret Canon, Vol. 1, show.  That record consists of mid 20th century r&b, jazz and/or blues songs which have not been previously covered or covered only once, plus one Danya original.  The band will consist of Randy Crafton (drums), Dave Richards (bass) and Pete Vitalone (keyboards).

For those who are going from Joe’s Pub to The Rodeo Bar, you can take Dayna’s bus if you already have a reservation or there is space available.  Otherwise, just take the 6 Train.

Then, at 9pm, the show at The Rodeo Bar will kick off with Mamie Minch.  Danya will join Mamie for a few songs during that set.  10pm, Dayna will play a set with song from American Standard, a lively collection of which draws from several American musical genres.  Members of Dayna’s band for this how will be Dan Reiser (drums,) Jay Foote (bass) and Jim Campilongo (guitar).  Dayna notes that Jim will be “playing the stompin stuff.”

Tonight: Dayna Kurtz at The Living Room

February 22, 2012

Over the past year, I’ve seen Dayna Kurtz and her band a number of times. Each set was mostly made up of songs from Danya’s album, Secret Canon, Vol. 1 (release date is April 10th), which consists of mid 20th century r&b, jazz and/or blues songs which have not been previously covered or covered only once. Dayna was able to infuse this material with enough passion to get an “Oh, Wow” from me and the crowd.  Tonight’s set should be drawn from the same material; at this show Danya will be playing with Dan Rieser on drums, Pete Vitalone on piano and B3 and Dave Richards on Bass

Tonight: Dayna Kurtz at Barbes

June 2, 2011

I saw Dayna Kurtz and her band at The Living Room last December and at The Bell House a few weeks later. Each set was mostly made up of songs from Danya’s forthcoming album, Secret Canon, Vol. 1, which consists of mid 20th century r&b, jazz and/or blues songs which have not been previously covered or covered only once. Dayna was able to infuse this material with enough passion to get an “Oh, Wow” from me and the crowd.  Tonight’s set should be drawn from the same material; at this show Danya will be playing in a trio format with Peter Vitalone on piano and organ and Dave Richards on upright bass.

Dayna Kurtz, Barbes, 376 9th Street, at the corner of 6th Avenue (F Train to 7th Avenue, use the 7th Avenue exit), 10pm, No Cover (But a contribution for the band is highly recommended)
