News and Notes: Mary Lee Kortes, Percy’s Tavern and SXSW 2011 Approaches

February 8, 2011

I’ve seen Mary Lee Kortes, leader of Mary Lee’s Corvette in the audience at a few shows around town lately.  Soon, we’ll be able to see her on the other side of the stage.  On March 11th and 12th, Mary Lee debuts “The Songs of Beulah Rowley” a song cycle with narration and projections based on the biography of the fictional character Beulah Rowley, a regionally-known depression-era singer and songwriter from the Midwest.  For information about times and tickets, check  The Cell Theater.

New Venue: I visited Percy’s Tavern (no website at the moment) over the weekend.  This is a new venue which has recently opened on the corner of Avenue A and 13th Street.  The place is a comfortable Irish pub.  The layout is basically a long rectangle with the long sides running up 13th Street.  The space is divided into a bar area on one side and a seated area on the other, with the stage area in front of the seated area by the front windows.   The sound was good.  Staff told me that Percy’s plans to have music on the weekends and is working toward getting a schedule up shortly.  In all, this looks like a promising addition to the roster of local music venues.

SXSW 2011 is coming:  On March 15th, the music portion of South By Southwest 2011 (which will be referred to as SXSW from hereon out) will begin.  If you are going (or even thinking of going) now is the time to start making your plans.  Let’s face it; with about 2,000 bands playing in about 100 places over four days and nights, you can’t just let serendipity guide you.  Beside the main SXSW music website, I’ve found that SXSW Baby has loads of practical, helpful hints.

Tonight: The Demolition String Band at Percy’s Tavern

February 5, 2011

When any band has string band in its name, you expect old-timey country.  Well, you are just not going to get that from The Demolition String Band.  There’s twang and alt country, but the DSB rock hard as well.  The band is led by front woman Elena Skye and guitarist Boo Rainers, and whatever they are playing in their self described genre of hardcorn grindgrass fullbarn stompdown twangadelix, your ears will definitely be pleased.

The Demolition String Band, Percy’s Tavern, 210 Ave A at 13th Street (L Train to 1st Avenue) 10pm, Check with the venue for cover charge, if any
