Tonight: Misty Boyce at Maxwell’s

January 18, 2012

Misty Boyce has been hard at work recording the follow up to her self-titled first album. Tonight, Misty switches gears and hits the stage at Maxwell’s in Hoboken.

Misty has been featuring songs from her forthcoming album in her band shows, and I’ll guess we’ll hear them here too.  As Misty is a singer-songwriter whose instruments are piano and other keys, comparisons to Tori Amos are inevitable.  But it really is hard to sum up Misty in a word or two.  Her songs are well crafted and run the gamut of human emotions, her playing and singing are spirited, she has great stage presence and audiences respond to her.  You can check out a video of one of Misty’s newer songs, which will probably be titled Hands Untied by clicking here.

Misty Boyce, Maxwell’s, 11th and Washing Streets, Hoboken, 9:30pm, $10

Music Video: Misty Boyce – New Untitled Song

January 9, 2012

As Now I’ve Heard Everything reported previously, singer-songwriter Misty Boyce is in the studio recording a new album.  Misty is currently performing many of the new songs which will make up that album in her shows.  I’ve been told by Misty that she hasn’t settled on titles for her new batch of songs yet.  So here is a performance of one of those currently nameless songs from a few months back.  Whatever this one ends up being called, it has a hook that grabs me every time.

Update: Misty has advised me that this song may be titled Hands Untied

Tonight: Triple Header Early Show at The Mercury Lounge

January 4, 2012

Misty Boyce

There’s a pretty good triple bill tonight at The Mercury Lounge.  First up at 7pm is Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club.  Chris is a very good song writer and he and the band play tuneful rock and he’s also a producer at Galuminum  Foil Studios in Brooklyn.

Then at 8pm, Misty Boyce and her six piece band will take the stage.  Misty instruments of choice are the keys and synth and she and the band will play her atmospheric songs.  Most of those songs will make up her album that will be released later this year.

Finally at 9pm, it will be time for Elizabeth and The Catapult.  Even though they have been around for a while, I have yet to see this band.  I’m looking forward to correcting that tonight.

Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club (7pm), Misty Boyce (8pm) and Elizabeth and The Catapult (9pm),  Mercury Lounge, 217 East Houston Street between Ludlow and Essex Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit, F Train to Delancey Street or J or M Trains to Essex Street), $10

News and Notes: What’s Ahead in 2012?

January 1, 2012

Happy 2012!!  Now that 2011 is done, let’s take a look at some of the things in store for us musically during the coming year.

•In the studio: Steve Wynn and The Miracle 3 will go back into the studio to record a new album this year, the follow up to 2010′s Northern Aggression.  Jeremiah Birnbaum of The Ramblers is already in the studio and recording an acoustic album of songs that he’s written since The Ramblers recorded their last album, Getting There, about two years ago.  According to Jeremiah, the songs on the new album will be record in as few takes as possible, preferably just one.  Misty Boyce is also currently in the studio, working on the follow-up to her 2010 self titled album.

•New releases: James Maddock will unveil a new music video of a new song this month.  Also coming in January are new albums from Leonard Cohen, Chuck Prophet and Spanking Charlene.  In February, the new album from Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds will finally see the light of day.  In the spring, we will get the first new album from The Del-Lords since 1990 and the new one from Sydney Wayser.  There’s also a new album from Lisa Jaeggi in the offing.  Finally, the records from The MastersonsMelody Kills and Deni Bonet, available only at their shows in 2011, should get their official release this year.
