Photo Recap: The Last Call at The Lakeside Lounge

May 1, 2012

As of 4am this morning, The Lakeside Lounge is history.  But last night was The Last Call at The Lakeside Lounge and everyone who was there joined to close the place down with grit, humor, camaraderie and straight ahead, no frills, no foolin’ rock ‘n’ roll.

Update: Read Nate Schweber’s article in the New York Times Blog about the last night at The Lakeside here.

Here are some pictures.

January 27, 2012

The Amygdaloids, Joseph LeDoux, Tyler Volk, Daniela Schiller and Amanda Thorp,  are four scientists who play rock and whose songs are based on the work they do at their day jobs.  Rosanne Cash appeared on their last album and they’ve played live with Lenny Kaye, Steve Wynn and The Kennedys.  Tonight’s show is the CD release show for their new EP, All in Our Minds.  No matter what their day job is, these guys really rock.

The AmygdaloidsThe Bowery Electric, 327 Bowery between 2nd and 3rd Streets (6 Train to Bleeker Street or Astor Place, F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 2nd Avenue exit), 7pm, $7

Tonight: Five Shows (You Can Probably Catch Three of Them)

July 16, 2011

The choice sign is posted above because it’s another of those “everyone is playing tonight” nights.  The real tough decision is at 11pm, when three of those five shows occur.  Here are your choices posted in time of show order:

Time Updated: Megan Reilly (atmospheric rock; Megan doesn’t play all that often) – The Living Room (154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets, F Train to 2nd Avenue) – 10pm 9pm, No Cover (but a donation for the band is highly recommended)

Lenny Kaye (long time guitarist for Patti Smith, producer and music writer) – Mercury Lounge (217 East Houston Street between Ludlow and Essex Streets, F Train to 2nd Avenue or Delancey Street or J Train to Essex Street), 11pm, $10

Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club (straight ahead rock) – Littlefield (622 DeGraw Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues, Brooklyn, R Train to Union Street) – 11pm, $10 (also on the bill are Clyde, Matt Singer and Kate Kilbane- see above)

Spanking Charlene (punk and rock and tonight Eric Ambel sits in with them) – Lakeside Lounge (162 Avenue B near 10th Street, any train to 14th Street or the L Train to 1st Avenue, transfer t0 the M14A or M14D bus to 11th Street and walk to Avenue B) – 11pm, No Cover (but donation for the band strongly encouraged)

Updated – Yet another good show: Dayna Kurtz (jazz and blues) – The Living Room (154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets, F Train to 2nd Avenue) – 11pm – 1am, No Cover (but a donation for the band is highly recommended)

Music Video: The Amygdaloids (with Guests Lenny Kaye and Steve Wynn) – Brainstorm

October 12, 2010

The Amygdaloids are four scientists (Joseph LeDoux, Daniella Schiller, Tyler Volk, Gerald McCollam) who write song based upon their work. But not only are they a pretty good band, they travel in good company.  Here is a clip of their song Brainstorm with  Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Band) and Steve Wynn (Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3, The Baseball Project and The Dream Syndicate) joining in on the guitar shredding. This live performance occurred on September 29th this year at Don Hill’s in New York City.  This is a long video, nine minutes in all, and the song actually starts 30 seconds in.

Tonight: Multimedia Science and Music with The Amygdaliods and Special Guests at Don Hill’s

September 29, 2010

A tip of the hat to Claude Scales over at Self Absorbed Boomer who brought this show to my attention.  Not only is this a musical performance, there are science lectures, music videos and magic.  Even though I’ve not heard of The Amygdaloids before, the list of musical guests has sold me on this show, which is the release party for the Theory of Mind CD.  Here’s the rundown:

Lectures on brain and mind by Joseph LeDoux and Daniela Shiller (the science behind the songs);
Muisc by The Amygdaloids (Joseph LeDoux, Daniella Schiller, Tyler Volk, Gerald McCollam):
Guests appearances by: Lenny Kaye, Steve Wynn, Ward White , Kathena Bryant and The Kennedys;
Magic by Mark Mitton; and
Music videos by Noah Hutton and Alexis Gambis

The Amygdaloids, Don Hill’s, 511 Greenwich Street at Spring Street (1, A,  C or E Trains to Canal or C or E Trains to Spring Street), doors 7pm /show 7:30pm, $10

Saturday: Rent Party for Banjo Jim’s

January 29, 2010

The Great Recession has taken its toll on many businesses out there, and friendly, cozy comfortable bars which present music have unfortunately not been exempted.  So tomorrow night, Saturday, January 30, Banjo Jim’s, that NIHE favorite over on 9th Street and Avenue C will be throwing a rent party, and it’s a rent party steeped in history.

Providing the music (and some history) will be David Amram, Lenny Kaye and John Ventimiglia.  Also performing will be Brooklyn Boogaloo Blowout, Bill Sims Jr. and Morley.  Additional special guests are promised.  Cover is a very reasonable under the circumstances $20.

Rent Party for Banjo Jim’s, 700 9th Street at Avenue C, 8pm, $20.
