Tonight: Amy Speace at Joe’s Pub

April 16, 2013

Amy Speace 4
The last time I saw Amy Speace was at SXSW2013.  Amy’s show there was bedeviled by sound problems which she finally transcended by climbing up on a table and finishing the show without amplification.  I have no doubt that tonight’s show will run far more smoothly than that.

Amy’s new album, How to Sleep in a Stormy Boat, is released today, and this is the CD release show for it.  Amy is coming into town with a band consisting of cello, guitar and backing vocals.  She’s playing Joe’s Pub, a nice match for this batch of songs of simple elegance.  Amy will hit the stage at 9:30, but I don’t think this show is too late for a school night.

Amy Speace, Joe’s Pub, 425 Lafayette Street between Astor Place and E. 4th Street (R Train to 8th Street, 6 Train to Astor Place, B, D, F or M Trains to Broadway-Lafayette), 9:30pm, $14

This Week: Lots of Great Shows in NYC

March 11, 2013

Choices Large

It’s SXSW 2013 time and as you read this I am making my way to Austin, where I will attend and report on this year’s festivities.  Although when one is down there, it feels like every band in the world and most of their audiences are there too, that is hardly the case.

Certainly this year there is no lack of bands or shows back here in NYC, in fact this is one of the best SXSW weeks here in my memory.  So here’s what’s happening this week in the greatest city in the world:

Tonight: Alana Amram and The Rough Gems at Joe’s Pub

March 7, 2013

Alana Amram and Rough Gems

Tonight, at Joe’s Pub at 9:30pm, Alana Amram and The Rough Gems will play a set that combines alt country, Americana and rock.  Alana is a powerfully voiced singer who started out with country music but who has veered into music that combines elements of country with elements from other genres into a sound that is both wonderful and beyond just a simple description.

Alana Amram and The Rough GemsJoe’s Pub, 425 Lafayette Street between Astor Place and E. 4th Street (R Train to 8th Street, 6 Train to Astor Place, B, D, F or M Trains to Broadway-Lafayette), 9:30pm, $15
