Photo Recap: Radio Free Song Club at The Living Room

May 26, 2011

Tuesday night’s live presentation of The Radio Free Song Club at The Living Room was a star-studded absolute delight.  Backed by the house band, The Radio Free All Stars (Andy Burton, Doug Wieselman, Paul Moschella, David Mansfield, JD Foster and Dave Schramm), Don Piper, Jody Harris, Laura Cantrell, Dave Schramm, Kate Jacobs, Jennie Lowe Stearns, Victoria Williams and Freedy Johnston each played a new song for the show.  Although they were not present, Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby, Peter Blegvad and Peter Holsapple contribute a pre-recorded song for the festivities as well.  Nicholas Hill was the emcee/dj for the show, the 16th in the Radio Free Song Club series, which after a vote and discussion was dubbed the Sweet 16 Tons edition.  Here then are some photos of that show.

Tonight: Radio Free Song Club at The Living Room or Ursa Minor at Joe’s Pub

May 24, 2011

It’s one of those days where I want to be two places at once, with two excellent shows running opposite each other.  The choices are: Radio Free Song Club at The Living Room or Ursa Minor at Joe’s Pub.

The Radio Free Song Club is described on their website as:

a group of veteran writers with a monthly song deadline. Host Nicholas Hill presents these new tunes along with interviews and live performances and special guests. Some of the songs are finished and fully produced, some are roughly recorded fragments, some in-between. The writers are looking for a good song, the world is looking for a good song. Someone might get lucky.

Although The Radio Free Song Club draws on a number of musicians, tonight’s line up will consist of Victoria Williams, Freedy Johnston, Laura Cantrell, Dave Schramm, Kate Jacobs, David Mansfield and Jody Harris. who will play in a two hour set.

Ursa Minor consists of Michelle Casillas (guitar, vocals), Tony Scherr (guitar), Rob Jost (bass, vocals) and Rob DiPietro (drums, vocals).  Call their music atmospheric indie rock played by top caliber musicians.  This is the CD release show for their long awaited new record, Showface.

Tonight: You Have Choices! James Maddock at Rockwood Stage 2 or The Golden Palominos at The Living Room

September 11, 2010

Tonight two excellent acts are playing at exactly the same time three blocks apart.  When confronted with a choice like this, just remember that whatever choice you make will be a good one.

Over at The Rockwood Music Hal Stage 2, you’ll find James Maddock playing his monthly full band show.  James is certainly a favorite around here.  He had a wonderful album out last year, Sunrise on Avenue C, and he is even better live.  In fact, last month James recorded a live album (due out mid-October) right here at  The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 with his band, Oli Rockberger (piano), John Shannon (guitar), Drew Mortali (bass), Aaron Comess (drums) and Leslie Mendelson (vocals and tambourine).  James’ shows are not only excellent musically, they are just plain fun.  This is a ticketed show ($10 advance $12 at the door) which Freddie Stevenson will open.

Or see The Golden Palominos at The Living Room.  This show was announced by The Living Room on Twitter only last night.  This lineup, Anton Fier, Syd Straw, Jody Harris, Robert Kidney, Amanda Kramer, Jim Campilongo, Tony Maimone and Tony Scherr is the updated version of the 1985-87 edition of this band which only came back together in May of this year for two performances (they also performed at City Winery last night).  What you’ll get from this band is excellent vocals from Syd Straw, top notch guitar playing all around and even a few songs in the electric blues vein led by Robert Kidney.  The Golden Palominos is also a band that other musicians love and the last time I saw them play there were a whole bunch of NIHE’s favorites in the audience.

Here’s the recap:

Tonight: The Golden Palominos at The Living Room

May 11, 2010

Last Friday, the Syd Straw (1985-87) version of The Golden Palominos regrouped and performed for the first time in more than 20 years.  It was a great show with vocalist Syd Straw better than I’ve ever seen her and with guitarist Robert Kidney turning this rock band into a rousing electric blues band.

The audience was filled with other musicians: Steve Goulding (The Rumours/The Mekons/Garland Jeffreys/everyone who plays in NYC and needs a good drummer) was standing right in front of me, Rob Jost (Ursa Minor/Tony Scherr/Sasha Dobson/everyone who plays in NYC and needs a good bass player) was in the crowd and I’m pretty sure it was Maura Kennedy who ran past me with a camera at one point. I didn’t see Steve Wynn but he tweeted about the show.

This might be the final show for this lineup (Anton Fier, Syd Straw, Jody Harris, Robert Kidney, Amanda Kramer, Jim Campilongo, Tony Maimone and Tony Scherr) and if so, you really should get down to The Living Room tonight and see them.

The Golden Palominos, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street at Stanton Street (F or V Trains to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, $15
