If you are not going to see Leonard Cohen at Barclays Center tonight, the fine folks at Freddy’s Bar in Brooklyn’s Greenwood Heights have something quite interesting for you in its place. Here’s their description of tonight’s Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan Christmas Special:
We threw Bob in the mix, as he played the Center on 11/21, plus we just like the idea of his songs mixed in with Leonard’s. It will cost you a lot less than the Barclays’ show (as in, it’s free!), and the drinks and food are cheaper and better. So come on down and raise a holiday toast to the two septuagenarians and share in some holiday cheer. A Night of Cohen & Dylan Covers sung by our favorite local bands with Comedy skits imtertwined from our favorite local comedians.
Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan Christmas Special, Freddy’s Bar, 627 5th Ave between 17th and 18th Streets, Brooklyn (R Train to Prospect Avenue), 8:30pm, No Cover

June 5, 2012

It’s another one of those nights where you have many excellent choices. It’s the opening night for the 2012 edition of Celebrate Brooklyn, that long running music, movies, dance and spoken word series in Prospect Park. Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff gets things started there. Also since it’s the first Tuesday of the month, Freddy’s Bar, located just south of Park Slope, presents the always interesting and eclectic Brooklyn Scramble with host Alice Bierhorst and David Heatley and Amanda Thorpe.
If you’d prefer to be in Manhattan, you’ll find Freddie Stevenson at The Rockwood Music Hall. Kelli Scarr has a CD release show for her new country record, Dangling Teeth, over at Joe’s Pub (it’s her last New York City show until the fall). James Maddock and Dave Immergluck once again play a duo show as Jimmy and Immy at The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2. Finally, Julia Haltigan and her band play at Julia’s residency “for life” at The 11th Street Bar (newcomer Kelli Kings opens for Julia).
Jimmy Cliff, Celebrate Brooklyn (Prospect Park Bandshell), Entrances at 9th and 11th Streets and Prospect Park West (F or G Trains to 7th Avenue or 15th Street-Prospect Park), doors 6:30pm / show 8pm, Free (but a $3 contribution at the time of admission is highly recommended)
The Brooklyn Scramble with David Heatley, Amanda Thorpe and Alice Bierhorst, Freddy’s Bar, 627 5th Ave between 17th & 18th Streets, Brooklyn (R Train to Prospect Avenue), 8pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)
Freddie Stevenson, Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)
Kelli Scarr, Joe’s Pub, 425 Lafayette Street between Astor Place and E. 4th Street (R Train to 8th Street, 6 Train to Astor Place, B, D, F or M Trains to Broadway-Lafayette), 9:30pm, $15
Jimmy and Immy (James Maddock and Dave Immergluck), Rockwood Stage 2, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9:30pm, $15
Julia Haltigan (10pm), Kelli King opening (9pm), 11th Street Bar, 510 E. 11th Street between Avenues A &B (Any train to 14th Street or L Train to 1st Avenue, then transfer to the 14 A bus to 11th Street), No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)
