Tonight: Your Choice of Two Early Shows

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 17, 2012 by Eliot

Here’s a choice of two shows tonight, both of which begin on the early side.

I first saw Drina Seay (pronounced Sea) at Banjo Jim’s a few years back, mostly singing wonderful harmonies with the likes of Li’l Mo and The Monicats.  Drina has been playing with her own band, The Deep Blue Sea for a while now.  Tonight you’ll find Drina and her band at The Lakeside Lounge, for an early show beginning at 7pm.  You can expect American, country and roots music.

Your other choice is James Maddock‘s monthly show at his home base, The Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2.  James is certainly a favorite around here; his shows are not only excellent musically, they are just plain fun.  Joining James will be his band, Oli Rockberger (piano), John Shannon (guitar), Drew Mortali (bass), Aaron Comess (drums) and Leslie Mendelson (vocals and tambourine).  James has a new song, My Old Neighborhood, which I’m sure you’ll hear tonight.

Drina Seay, Lakeside Lounge, 162 Avenue B near 10th Street (any train to 14th Street or the L Train to 1st Avenue, transfer t0 the M14A or M14D bus to 11th Street and walk to Avenue B), 7pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is strongly encouraged)

James MaddockThe Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2,196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 7:30pm, $15

Tonight: Four Shows to Choose From Means This Is Not A Sleepy Sunday Night

Posted in Live NYC with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 29, 2012 by Eliot

There are lots of musical choices for you today and tonight.  Late this afternoon, there’s a benefit concert for Syrian relief which features Milton, Benjamin Cartel and others at The Living Room.  Then tonight, you can choose the rock of Hobson’s Choice, the adult pop of Melody Kills or the Country, Americana and whatever else at Li’l Mo’s Field of Stars with Monica “Li’l Mo” Passin, Drina Seay, Homeboy Steve and Candy and Women.

Syrian Relief Concert (A concert to benefit the humanitarian crisis in Syria featuring Dylan Connor, Milton, Benjamin Cartel, Victoria Vox and more),  The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit but note that the downtown F is not stopping at this station today), 4:30-6:30pm, $20 contribution  requested

Hobson’s Choice, Mercury Lounge, 217 East Houston Street between Ludlow and Essex Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit, F Train to Delancey Street but note that the downtown F is not stopping at these stations today, or J Train to Essex Street), $10

Li’l Mo’s Field of Stars with Monica “Li’l Mo” Passin, Drina Seay, Homeboy Steve and Candy and Women, Treehouse at 2A, 25 Avenue A between Houston and 2nd Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit, F Train to Delancey Street but note that the downtown F is not stopping at these stations today, or J Train to Essex Street), 8:30-11:30pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly encouraged)

Melody Kills, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit but note that the downtown F is not stopping at this station today), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly encouraged)

Today is the final day of CMJ, and many of today’s picks give you your last opportunity of CMJ to catch some of the bands you might have missed during the past few days.  Playing another set today are Sydney Wayser, Misty Boyce,Chris Cubeta and The Liars Club and Jonathan Richman.

Playing for the first time during CMJ tonight is Drina Seay who will sing and play her country, alt country and retro pop songs.  And finally, My Pet Dragon, a band which blends rock and a touch of 80s electro pop into an anthemic sound will play an early set tonight.

October is a busy month from what schedules have already been posted.  CMJ comes around in the later part of the month and many, but not all CMJ shows have been trickling out in the past few days.  There’s going to be some more to come, so check back here to see what’s going to be happening.

CMJ Update: There are frequently different times listed between the websites of CMJ, the club and the performer.  I’ve gone with the CMJ times whenever possible as they seem to be the earliest.  Most CMJ sets are short, in some cases, as short as 20 minutes.  When in doubt, check with the club before you leave.
