News and Notes

May 9, 2012

Is happy hour the new late night?  It used to be that big names would show up to a small club in the wee hours.  But lately, it seems that is happening in the late afternoon/early evening.  Two months ago Norah Jones and her band showed up at The Living Room to play an unannounced show at 6:30.  Yesterday, Glen Hansard played a show announced only to his fans around the same time.  And Glen brought a friend of his to help out: Bono.  Thanks to BillieJo Sheehan for getting the shot above and allowing Now I’ve Heard Everything to use it.

CBGB Festival: There’s a new group of owners of what is left of CBGBs.  They will be holding the CBGB Festival for four days beginning on July 5th.  The festival is modeled after SXSW and CMJ and will be held in a number of clubs throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.  The festival will also include screenings of more than 30 rock-themed films at two downtown cinemas and a series of 24 workshops and conferences and a spirits fest that will incorporate artisan spirits distillers.

Bands announced so far include: The Cro-Mags, Vision of Disorder, Sick of It All, Guided by Voices, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Cloud Nothings, Rocket From The Tombs, The Baseball Project, Craig Finn, Willie Nile,The Dirty Pearls, Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds, D Generation, David Johansen and Ben Taylor.

Venues include Arlene’s Grocery, The Bell House, The Bitter End, The Bowery Electric, The Box, Cafe Wha?, Th Canal Room, Summer Stage, City Winery, The Delancey, Fontana’s, The Gramercy Theater, Hank’s Saloon, The Highline Ballroom, Hill Country, Joe’s Pub, The Knitting Factory, Le Poisson Rouge, Lit Lounge, Littlefield, The Living Room, Local 269, Otto’s Shruken Head, Pianos, Sullivan Hall, Tammany Hall, Trash Bar and Webster Hall.

Badges for the music performances portion of CBGB Festival are now on sale for $69 through the end of May.  The price will go up June 1 to $79 and to $89 on July 5.  There is also a badge for film and a combined music and film badge.

Streaming: Spanking Charlene – Boyfriend

May 8, 2012

After yesterday’s review of Spanking Charlene‘s album Where Are the Freaks I was not quite ready to move on.  So here is Boyfriend, a song from that record for you to listen to (you can also buy it if you like).

News and Notes: Norah Jones to Play The Bell House This Friday (May 11)

May 7, 2012

The Bell House announced this afternoon that Norah Jones and her band will be playing a show there this Friday, May 11th at 9pm (door at 8pm). Tickets for this show will go on sale tomorrow, May 8 at 12 noon.  There is a limit of two tickets per person, and they will be sold only on a will call basis.  The face price of the tickets is $35, which puts them at around $40 with the ticketing fees.

I enjoyed seeing Norah and her new band play at The Tarrytown Music Hall last month (you can read my review of that performance here).  The Bell House is a great venue as long as you don’t mind standing, and is located in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn a short walk from the F, G and R trains.  On street parking can usually be found near The Bell House.

Update: The show sold out in less than three minutes.

Review: Spanking Charlene – Where Are the Freaks?

May 7, 2012

As a result of the recent closing of The Lakeside Lounge, the monthly appearance by Spanking Charlene, a combination party and show, is now on hiatus until the band finds a new club to call home.  I’m sure that some club out there would want to book a great band with a large, loyal following.  There is a show booked for the end of June up on the Upper West Side, so we’ll see what develops.  But for now, we’ll have to be content with the Where Are the Freaks?, the album which Spanking Charlene released earlier this year.

Spanking Charlene is led by the husband and wife team of Charlene McPherson (vocals) and Mo Goldner (guitar), and the band is rounded out with Eric Seftel (drums) and Alison Jones (bass).  Eric “Roscoe” Ambel joins the band playing guitar and additional instruments on this record; he also frequently appears with Spanking Charlene when they play live.

The band’s stock in trade is a combination of rock and punk together with intelligent, often feminist lyrics.  On this record, lead singer Charlene’s pristine vocals are mixed up front and with clarity and presence.  Mo provides both a snarling punk guitar and trades off leads with Eric Ambel.

Where Are the Freaks? contains a generous helping of Spanking Charlene music, 14 tracks worth, clocking in at about 45 minutes.  Highlights include opening track Secrets, Rev It Up, The Other Girl, I Like You as a Friend (quite an audience participation number live) and Dismissed with a Kiss.  That last song was produced by Steve Van Zandt along with the album’s final song, Canarsie (the prize Spanking Charlene got as the winner of The Underground Garage’s Best Unsigned Band contest).  The rest of the album was well produced by Eric Ambel.

I’ve been playing this record since it released.  So far this year, I have not heard a better straight ahead rock album than Where Are the Freaks?

Advance Planning: May 2012 Music Calendar Update (Added 5/6)

May 6, 2012

Word has com from Jeremiah Birnbaum that due to an injury to his vocal cords, he has canceled all upcoming solo and Ramblers shows. He will likely have corrective surgery within the month, and with luck will be fully recovered by mid-summer.  But Jeremiah will keep a limited schedule of dates as a guitarist, joining friends onstage and his Thursday residency at the venue now know as ZirZamin will continue with a slew of guest artists.  I’ve made that change to the May music calendar here and on the main May, 2012 music calendar, as well as added some additional shows.
