Tonight: Melody Kills at The Rockwood Music Hall (Plus Freebies Including All Come Together)

December 30, 2011

Melody Kills is keyboard whiz Leslie Mendelson and guitarist Steve McEwan, sometimes alone and sometimes with a band.  Tonight it’s just Leslie and Steve, but you’ll find them and their songs full of fun and energy and just top notch musically.

Yahoo figured that out when it recently put the Melody Kills song All Come Together in their news video looking back at the event of 2011.  You can find that Yahoo video here.  Of course if you would just like to see a full band live performance of that song, it was posted on Now I’ve Heard Everything a while back, just click here to see it.

But wait there’s more (as they say on late night TV ads). You can listen to and even download three free tracks from Melody Kills, including All Come Together.  Just click here to go to the Melody Kills music player and click download.

Melody Kills, Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 10pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the musicians is highly recommended)

Tonight: Joy Askew at The Rockwood Music Hall

December 29, 2011

As I mentioned in my interview with Joy Askew (read part 1 here and part 2 here), her gorgeous new album Drunk on You is keyboard based, atmospheric, rhythmically driven rock.  Tonight, Joy plays a full band show tonight at The Rockwood Music Hall to celebrate the release of that album.

You can expect to hear many songs from DOY and probably some from Joy’s earlier work.  The show starts at 7pm, so those of you who can’t stay out late on a school night can make this one.

Joy Askew, Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 7pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)

Freebies: 20 Songs from 19 Artists

December 28, 2011

As part of its year end reviews, WNYC has posted 20 downloadable songs from 19 artists (plus two more songs which are streaming only).  It’s a nice mix which covers  a huge number of musical genres; there is literally something for everyone.  You can access the downloads at the page here, but you’ll have to then click on the artist to get to that artist’s download.  But you can also just click on the artist in the table below to get to that artist’s download  or stream.

The Klezmatics Mavis Staples Bright Eyes The Mountain Goats
Big Freedia Melvin Van Peebles Mariachi El Bronx Taj Mahal
Kermit Ruffins Cat Power Bon Iver Bebel Gilberto
Broken Social Scene Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis The Bangles Bernie Worrell
Architecture in Helsinki Shaina Taub Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens
Streaming Only: Cake Huey Lewis and the News

Music Video: “Jim Morrison” – Jingle Bells

December 27, 2011

No this isn’t really Jim Morrison, but it still one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time.  Plus it’s seasonal!  Enjoy.

Tonight: Adam Levy at The Rockwood Music Hall

December 26, 2011

You might know Adam Levy (pronounced Leh vee) as the guitarist in Norah Jones‘ Handsome Band through 2007.  Adam is also known as a jazz and blues guitarist, but his talents certainly go beyond that. Adam is at home in any number of musical styles, is a fine songwriter and has a new CD, The Heart Collector to his credit.  If you haven’t seen Adam before, this show at The Rockwood Music Hall  is a wonderful way to get to know him.

Adam Levy, The Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street between Houston and Stanton Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 9pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly encouraged)

Music Video: The Kinks – Father Christmas

December 25, 2011

Is this the best rock Christmas song ever?  I think it is.

Music Video: Harper Blynn with Puss N Boots – The Chipmunk Song

December 24, 2011

From this past Monday’s Puss N Boots Christmas Spectacular, here’s a video of Harper Blynn singing that Christmas perennial, The Chipmunk Song.  Puss N Boots  (Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper) act as the house band.  There’s a bit of cinema verite at the beginning of this video, and the actual performance begins 27 seconds in.

Tonight: Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds at Brooklyn Bowl

December 23, 2011

The wonderfully brassy, both in terms of instrumentation (the band has four horns) and personality (of lead singer Arleigh Kincheloe), Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds packs them in where ever they play and then gets everyone up and dancing.   In addition to Sister Sparrow herself, the band is made up of Jackson Kincheloe (harmonica), Bram Kincheloe (drums), Aidan Carroll (bass), Sasha Brown (guitar), Ryan “Spatch” Snow (trombone), JJ Byars (alto saxophone), Cole Kamen-Green (trumpet) and Johnny Butler (baritone saxophone).  If you haven’t yet seen them, you need to do it now.  If you’ve seen them before, you already know that.  And their self-titled record from last year was one of Now I’ve Heard Everything Best Albums of 2010.  The band has been away from New York and on the road for the past several months, so don’t miss this opportunity to see one of the best live acts out there.  Tall Tall Trees is the opening act tonight.

Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds, Brooklyn Bowl, 61 Wythe Avenue between N. 11th & 12th Streets, Williamsburg (G Train to Nassau Avenue or L Train to Bedford Avenue), doors 6pm / show 8pm, $8

Tonight: The Ramblers at The Living Room

December 22, 2011

The Ramblers (out of the picture: keyboardist Scott Stein)

Later, The Ramblers will take the stage at 11pm.  Guitarist Jeremiah Birnbaum and keyboardist Scott Stein will lead the band  through a set of straight ahead rock with some southern rock influences.  And since there’s a B3 organ on stage at the Living Room, Scott will rock it.  This is the last show in The Ramblers’ monthly Thursday night residency at The Living Room.

The Ramblers, The Living Room, 154 Ludlow Street between Stanton and Rivington Streets (F Train to 2nd Avenue, use the 1st Avenue exit), 11pm, No Cover (but a contribution for the band is highly recommended)
