A combination of straight ahead rock and punk, this band won the Little Steven’s Underground Garage Best Unsigned Band in America Contest. One reviewer described Spanking Charlene this way: “this band sounds almost exactly like X! Except with better vocals.”
They also have a quite sense of humor. One gig this year was billed as a tribute to Spanking Charlene played by Spanking Charlene. Last month they said that their show was a benefit for the poor beleaguered CEO of BP, Tony Hayward (although they made clear that they would not give him any money). And tonight, well this is what landed in my inbox this week:
Come to the Spanking Charlene Restoring Economic Wellness (SCREW) Show on Saturday July 10th at the Lakeside Lounge. Follow us down the twisty SCREWed up trail of international finance to see how this works:
1) You spend money at the Lakeside on drinks, the photo booth, the band and, of course, tipping the fantastic bartenders;
2) The bartenders use their tip money to invest in bicycle repair, travel, porn, and midget porn;
3) The bicycle repair shops stay in business; Europeans and Central Americans are exposed to East Village culture, increasing tourism to the city; and dwarf porn actors have an audience for their craft.
They’re good. Go see ‘em.
