Not Quite Music: A World Without Intellectual Property Protection

I saw this video the other day and found it fascinating.  It’s a presentation by Johanna Blakely about how the fashion industry works without having any intellectual property protection (copyrights or patents).

What does this have to do with music?  Our friends, the record labels and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), keep telling us that the making of unauthorized copies is theft.  It’s not.  Theft means you own something, I take it and you no longer have it.  Theft is a crime.  The making of unauthorized copies is not.  It’s a civil matter.

In the fashion industry deals with people copying things without authorization all the time.  Here then, are lessons from fashion’s free culture.
